Correspondence

Scope and content
Series consists of records pertaining to the British Columbia Women’s Institute (BCWI), administered at the provincial level. Across activities are diaries, artifacts, and photographs.

Series consists of records pertaining to the BCWI’s intersections with the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada (FWIC), into which the BCWI reported. Documents in this series include publications printed by the organization, documents detailing the history of the group, as well as records relating to conventions hosted by the FWIC, where the BCWI was represented.

Immigration and Settlement

Series consists of records that provide insight into the history of immigration and settlement in Canada. The Chung collection is renowned for its extensive and unique collections on immigration and settlement, and the photographs, historical documents, and artefacts in this series illustrate the struggles and eventual successes of Chinese immigrants and their descendants in fields such as business, politics, and the arts. The predominant focus of this series is Chinese immigration and settlement, from the discovery of gold in British Columbia through the construction of the transcontinental railway, exclusionary immigration policies, and the development and growth of Chinese communities in Canada. In addition to Chinese and Asian immigration and settlement, this series also contains material related to Scottish immigration in Canada.

This series has been arranged into four subseries: Chinese immigration and settlement to Canada, the Yip Family and Yip Sang Company, the Chinese Freemasons (Cheekungtong), and Clandonald and Scottish immigration to Canada.

Community and political activity

This series consists of records that were created and received predominantly after the late 1970s that reflect Lee’s involvement with the Social Credit and Conservative parties of Canada as well as her work to organize as part of the Chinese Canadian community in Vancouver.
Records in this series include ephemera collected by Lee from events that she was invited to and attended as a result of her political and community involvement; correspondence between Lee and the politicians that she volunteered for and lobbied; meeting minutes and correspondence from her work with the Vancouver Chinese Canadian Activity Centre and its subsidiary groups, the Chishaun Housing Society and Plum Blossom Childcare Society; and several awards and certificates of recognition that Lee received for her contributions.

[Biographical Files]

Series consists of 2.4 m of textual records and graphic material related to nurses who have made significant contributions to their profession in British Columbia. They include records related to the person's life and career, photographs, copies of publications, memories and biographical information and other records related to nursing activities in B.C. A brief biography of each subject is included.

An item level description of file contents is located at the front of each file. A full index of all files created by the B.C. History of Nursing Society Archives with biographies, contents list and additional information is available, located in RBSC-ARC-1831-102-15.

Photos of events and activities in British Columbia

This series focuses on images of notable events, as well as scenes of everyday life and activity in British Columbia. Events depicted include construction (the building of the Lions Gate Bridge) and destruction (notably a sequence of photographs showing the 1938 fire at CPR Pier D in Vancouver), as well as public gatherings like parades and celebrations, such as the 1936 Golden Jubilee of Vancouver's Chinatown. There are also high-profile visits featuring the Governor-General the Duke of Connaught (1912), and Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) in 1919.

Everyday life photographs focus on work scenes and industry, shipping, pastimes and recreation. These include images of patriotic activities during World War II.

Many of the photographs have provenance or other identifying information written on the back, including the original location of the photograph if it is a copy from another archives or collection. Some photographs are accompanied by photocopies of newspaper coverage and other information on the event pictured.

Portraits of Persons in British Columbia

The series consists of portrait photographs of persons in British Columbia from 1870-1960. Portrait photographs were originally created by a number of photographers, including P.L. Okamura, Hannah Maynard, and S.A. Spencer. Photographs created after 1880 tend to be the products of amateur or street photographers, and as a result, individuals depicted therein are in informal attire. Most of the individuals depicted in the photographs are not identified. The predominant focus of the series is on representations of white settler society—particularly children--though photographs of Indigenous persons and persons of colour are included as well. There are also several photograph of Chinese Canadians in Victoria and Vancouver.

Moogk’s original physical order is preserved in the series. Record types include photographs--particularly tintypes, cartes de visite, and studio cabinet photographs; handwritten notes by Moogk outlining Vancouver photographers operative from 1858-1920; newspaper clippings related to Vancouver photographers; and cards from street photographers.

British Columbia Electric Railway Company Records

The series consists of records gathered by Peter Moogk relating to the British Columbia Electric Railway Company’s (BCER) interurban train lines. These records were originally created by the BCER, its successor (BC Hydro and Power Authority), and various photographers between 1909 and 1989. Special areas of focus in Moogk’s collection include streetcars and city buses in the Lower Mainland, Victoria, and Saanich; BCER employees’ social events; and civic events in Victoria.
The series preserves Moogk’s original order, in which files contain materials grouped by subject and documentary form. Record types include photographs—primarily black and white copy prints, in addition to a limited number of colour photographs and postcards; original BCER documents, including union agreements, timetables, BCER employees’ publications such as newsletters and magazines, land registry forms, employment applications, accident reports, insurance records, tickets and passes, transit tokens, internal correspondence, signs and posters from inside streetcars; and a copy of a CJOR radio script about the BCER for the program Salute to Industry.

Manuscripts - Thomas Crosby

Series consists of manuscripts that include essays and notes that could have been used for sermons, biographies and plays about his life, his collections, diaries and ship logs, and a Pledge book with the names of the people of Port Simpson.

Hugh McLennan (1927-2004) files

The series consists of photographs and textual records spanning the period 1850-1984, predominantly 1880-1960, relating to the McLennan family as arranged by Hugh McLennan (1927-2004). The series also comprises records related to Hugh McLennan's work as a camp counsellor north of Montreal during the early 1940s.

The series includes photographs; incoming and outgoing correspondence; genealogical and family information; diaries, including World War I diaries, and remembrances; newspaper clippings and ephemera; official documents, including wills and marriage certificates; obituaries and tributes; drafts of writings, research notes, and sketches; McLennan's coil-bound notebooks about canoe trips, a typescript of one of McLennan's camping journals and accompanying photographs; a letter to a family member regarding McLennan family genealogy; and photocopies of birth, marriage, and death notes in the family Bible. Family members prominently represented include Hugh McLennan (1825-1899), John Stewart McLennan (1853-1939), Francis McLennan (1857-1940), Bartlett McLennan (1868-1918), Isabella Christine McLennan (1870-1960), Hugh McLennan (1887-1915), and William McLennan (1856-1904).

Notebooks

Series consists of notebooks kept by Doyle containing fisheries statistics, figures, and other types of information. Includes notebooks containing information on the operations of the Skeena River Commercial Company, and the Namu, Mill Bay, Kimsquit, Kumeon, Port Essington and Port Edward, Bella Coola, Tallheo canneries. Series also includes notes on the British Columbia Packers Association, 1903-1908, and general journals kept by Doyle, 1905 to 1922, containing information on his business dealings and other cannery-related issues. Personal Papers and Correspondence

Series consists of Doyle's incoming and outgoing correspondence, as well as biographical material documenting some of his career in the fishing industry. Also included are biographical sketches that Doyle wrote about people he encountered during his time in British Columbia.

General Files

Series consists of records related to Miki’s literary, cultural, political, and academic activities. The series contains conference programs and abstracts, correspondence, travel itineraries and invoices, notes, reports, news clippings, forms, grant applications, research flies, articles, essays, and scripts, publication agreements, Miki’s curriculum vitae, audio and video recordings of conference proceedings and of Miki speaking, reading, performing, and being interviewed, award plaques and certificates, posters, and other records documenting the range of projects and activities that Miki has been involved in over four decades.

Teaching and Academic Records.

Series consists of correspondence, pamphlets, poems, minutes, reports, applications, evaluations and other records pertaining to Miki's teaching and academic activities. Includes correspondence between Miki and colleagues at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and other academic institutions, as well as correspondence relating to Miki’s research activities and his involvement and communication with various interest groups and associations. Series also includes projects, papers, correspondence and evaluations relating to courses taught by Miki at SFU, publications by writers who Miki arranged to have visit SFU, and reports, correspondence, and applications pertaining to Government grant and work study funding of projects proposed by or supported by Miki. Series also includes minutes and related correspondence and reports of a committee to establish a Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing at SFU.

Artwork

Series consists of three subseries: Unfinished artwork, drawings, and sketches; Reproductions and prints; and Art inventory files. Records contain original artwork by Lansdowne (most of it unfinished paintings and sketches) as well as a few pieces by amateur artists who were fans of Lansdowne's work and reproductions of Lansdowne’s artwork which include prints, posters, banners, exhibit catalogues and cards, order forms, stamps, road maps, calendars and the like. Records also include Art inventory files which contain records on pieces of art that Lansdowne produced, including an art inventory card index, and files varying in contents, but which typically included at least one reproduction of the artwork, an envelope containing an alpha-numeric code and the name of the bird(s) featured in each piece. Art inventory files may also include photographs, negatives, positives, slides, and photocopies and the like.

Photographs

Series contains Lansdowne’s personal photographs including pictures of family and friends, as well as pictures of him at work, and publicity photographs taken of him. Series also includes some photographs of birds, both live and taxidermic, which Lansdowne may have used as studies for his artwork. Series includes negatives, prints, slides, contact sheets along with a small number of envelopes, letters and notes.

Legal Documents

Series consists of legal documents concerning the Inverness Cannery and the Nass River Canners, and clippings of legal notices pertaining to fisheries. Series also includes documents relating to a patent for wood turning machines.

Printed work

This series contains printed work. The majority of the material is the work of Robert Reid and includes business stationery and cards, certificates, greeting cards, posters and pamphlets. Material was printed under a number of pressed that employed Reid and under the presses owned and operated by Reid.

Also present in this series is the printed work of other publishers, designers and printers. Often, the creators of these works are unspecified.

Asian American communities and organizations

Series consists of records relating to Asian American ethnic communities, in particular the American Chinese communities in San Francisco, California, and the state of Washington. Newsletters, photographs, magazines, flyers, correspondence, brochures and pamphlets, and audio material in this series focus on Asian performing, visual, and literary arts and cultural events. In addition, there is material relating to protests for tenants of the International Hotel in San Francisco (a low-cost hotel where many Asian immigrants lived) and Chol Soo Lee, a Korean American who was wrongly convicted for murder in 1973.

Literary, performing, and visual arts

Series consists of cultural event programs and flyers from Canada and the west coast of the United States, predominately events taking place in Vancouver, Toronto, Washington and California. Events include musical performances, author readings, art exhibits, plays, festivals, film screenings, and conferences on arts and cultural topics. Other material in the series include cartoons, photographs of musical artists, dancers, and stage performers from Vancouver and elsewhere, meeting minutes of the Vancouver Cultural Alliance (now known as the Alliance for Arts and Culture), and material from the Vancouver Folk Music society.

Go for Broke Festivals

Series consists of records relating to the Go for Broke festivals, which were held in 1995 and 1996. Go for Broke featured Asian cultural performances including performing arts, music, and literary art. These events were responsible for the creation of the Asian Canadian Performing Arts Resource (ACPAR) and a precursor to Vancouver Asian Heritage Month. Records include headshots and actor resumes of the performers involved with Go for Broke, program planning records, production schedules, programs and posters, articles about Go for Broke, photographs, and scripts.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence sent to Jim Wong-Chu by friends, family, colleagues, and others. In addition, the series includes correspondence collected by Jim Wong-Chu with correspondence belonging to or sent by others, including Rick Shiomi, Helen Koyama, Joy Kogawa, Andy Quan, Kam Sein, Paul Yee, Phil Hayashi, and Linda Uyehara Hoffman.

The series is arranged by senders' last name and first name (if correspondence was sent on behalf of an organization then the organization name appears in parentheses by the senders' name) or by subject (e.g. correspondence with unidentified senders and collected correspondence).

Personal works

Series consists of materials related to literary, visual, and research projects and works by Jim Wong-Chu including notebooks with writings and sketches, the Pender Guy Radio program, Break Even Productions, Expo 1986, Yellow Peril: Reconsidered, Gum San Po, conference presentations, cartoon drawings, proposals and correspondence relating to research of youth crime in Vancouver's Chinese Canadian communities and photographs. In addition to these materials are manuscript and type-written records of Jim Wong-Chu's own literary works as well as books and anthologies he edited and contributed to, articles about Jim Wong-Chu and his works and community involvements, publicity materials for public events featuring Jim Wong-Chu, and photographic prints, slides, and negatives of Jim Wong Chu's visual works.

Personal records

Series consists of personal records belonging to Jim Wong-Chu. Record types include an expired passport from childhood, certificate of change of name, elementary school records, personal correspondence, personal photographs of friends and family, secondary and post-secondary school records, news clippings, notes, reports, biographical information, immigration records for Jim Wong-Chu's mother, business contracts, and artwork, posters, certificates of achievement, invitations and ephemera collected by Jim Wong-Chu.

Multimedia

Series is made up of various audio-visual materials, predominantly detailing the activities of Greenpeace-Canada as shown through Greenpeace-produced documentaries and short advertisements, radio news stories pertaining to Greenpeace activities and interviews by prominent environmentalists, and video or audio recordings of protests, protesters being arrested, and records of activities which Greenpeace was protesting, such as logging and other environmental destruction. Series also contains a large number of videos that showcase the biological diversity present in North America.

Printed materials

Series is divided into two sub-series: Magazines featuring Lansdowne’s artwork and Newspaper and magazine clippings. Records include copies of magazines in which Lansdowne’s artwork is featured, along with newspaper and magazine clippings featuring articles about Lansdowne’s life and career. Also included are a small number of photographs.

Textual records

Series is divided into three subseries: Correspondence; Financial records; and Manuscripts, biographical information, and other textual materials. Records include textual records such as business and personal correspondence (including fan mail); financial records and receipts; drafts of writing related to birds and Lansdowne's personal history; and other ephemera.

Design material

This series contains records relating to the design of books and printed work. Content includes paper samples, typography samples and books, marbled paper, page mock-ups and other material that contributes to the aesthetic development of Reid's work.

Administrative and executive

The series contains records pertaining to Vancouver Status of Women’s (VSW’s) administrative and executive activities. These activities fall into several categories: financial administration, which included grant applications to governments and other organizations, budgeting, tax payments, bill payments, and resource distribution amongst staff; committee administration; volunteer administration; employment offers and employee management; correspondence with other organizations, particularly women centers in Vancouver; and strategic planning for the organization as a whole. Records in the series range in date from the early 1970s to 2016.

The physical order in which records were received has been maintained; original order has been re-constituted intellectually. Record types represented in the series include the following: grant applications, correspondence with funding agencies, budgets, cashflow statements, receipts, invoices, committee meeting minutes, volunteer training materials, employment offer letters, staff correspondence about internal issues, correspondence with other organizations, and annual reports.

Research and reference resources

The series contains the resources that Vancouver Status of Women (VSW) collected to support its own research projects and the needs of its visitors. Additionally, it includes VSW briefs, press releases, and reports that were inter-filed with research and reference resources. Reference resources were gathered from a wide variety of local, provincial, national, and international sources from the 1970s to 2008. Sources from which resources originate include the National Action Committee for the Status of Women, the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women, local women centers, and other organizations committed to anti-oppression work. Subjects that are addressed frequently in these resources include the following: childcare, gender discrimination in the public education system, community services for women, pensions for women, inadequate unemployment and welfare rates, pornography, prison, sex work, the anti-choice movement, pay equity, violence against women, corporate globalization, and anti-racism.

Subject files in the series were originally arranged in distinct, alphabetized sets spanning two accruals. This order has been maintained physically and intellectually. The physical order in which all other records were received has been maintained as well; original order has been re-constituted intellectually. Record types represented in the series include the following: subject files containing newspaper and magazine clippings, correspondence, and press releases and briefs from other organizations; VSW briefs, press releases, and reports; print copies of academic journals; books; magazines; reports, publications, and grey literature from other organizations; a “Women’s Kit” featuring educational aids that counter sexist stereotypes; and cassette tapes bearing audio recordings in honour of International Women’s Day.

Advocacy

Records in this series pertain to Vancouver Status of Women’s (VSW’s) advocacy function. These activities primarily included organizing and participating in committees and task forces set up by all levels of government, lobbying, preparing briefs on legislative documents and materials, creating and circulating petitions, corresponding with other organizations, event planning, planning and participating in social justice related events such as End legislated Poverty, and calling attention to issues facing women domestic and international by publishing op-eds in newspapers.

Record types in this series include: correspondence with the Ministry of Justice and different coalitions such as BC Coalition of Women Centres and the 52% Coalition; meeting agendas and minutes; information sheets and brochures; event invitations; forum materials; conference posters and presentations; protest posters and signs; briefs; petitions; attendance sheets; press releases; federal and provincial election fact sheets; and research materials on social justice related topics such as poverty, sex work, sexism, racism and classism.

Archives Administration

Series covers the internal workings of the Archives Collective, especially the activities of James Thomas. Contents are mostly related to various archival or historical networks that the Collective was a part of, or correspondence dedicated to collecting materials from organization and subsequently housing the collected materials. Series contains letters, newsletters, lists of organizations, and donation receipts.

Subject Files

Series contains files related to the activities of queer organizations and activists in Vancouver, Toronto and other parts of Canada and the United States. A significant portion of this series is related to the political activities of Randy Notte, a contributor to the collection. Contents include informational pamphlets and brochures, legal cases, reports and statement papers, political materials, meeting minutes, organizational ephemera, newspaper clippings, periodicals, newsletters, and posters.

Kinesis photobank and production room materials

This series contains materials relating to the production of Kinesis and the activities of the Vancouver Status of Women.

Records in this series are from the production room of Kinesis and predominantly reflect the production cycle of the magazine and its records organization system for photographic and graphic materials that were used in or collected for future use in the magazine.

This is seen, for example, in the files that are labeled [Kinesis Photobank], which represent materials that were collected by the editors and filed alphabetically by subject so that they could be retrieved for relevant future articles that required use of visual media.

In addition to these subject-oriented files, this series also contains a significant collection of photographs, negatives, and contact sheets that depict events that were assigned to photographers for Kinesis articles. Documented events include International Women's Day (various years), Single Mom's Day in the Park (various years), Vancouver Pride (various years), Take Back the Night (various years), Women Rally for Action 1976, and the World March of Women 2000. There are also photos from international conferences such as the XI International AIDS Conference, which was held in Vancouver in 1996, and the World Summit for Social Development, which was held in Copenhagen in 1995. While the events captured in these materials took place across the existence of Kinesis (from 1974-2001), a large bulk of the photos are from the 1990s. In addition to materials that were produced by individuals on the Kinesis masthead for the journal, there are also photographs, cartoons, and press releases that were sent to the editors for their consideration or at their request.

Other materials within this series include photographs and ephemera that relate to the production of Kinesis and the activities of VSW--such as writer training retreat materials; photographs of events such as VSW's annual 'Recommending Women' event as well as candids from the office; commemorative materials that were produced during significant anniversary years such as postcards printed for the 20th anniversary of the magazine; and posters and signage that used to hang in the production office.

While the series is predominantly graphic materials, there is a small amount of textual materials that relate to the administrative needs of the magazine and its production.

Kinesis

The series contains records related to the production, publication, marketing, and distribution of Kinesis, Vancouver Status of Women’s most significant publication in BC.

Records in this series include design sketches and proofs, advertising, readers’ correspondences and surveys, volunteer training manuals, staff self evaluations, monthly activity reports, correspondence and events related to Canadian Magazine Publishers Association, BC Association of Magazine Publishers as well as Western Canadian Women's News, fundraising, editorial notes, administrative documents such as policy and structuring documents, hiring procedures, and meeting minutes, in addition to research materials on subjects and authors of texts published in Kinesis including newspaper clippings and periodicals samples. This series also includes selected copies of Kinesis from 1975 to 1986.

Affiliated organizations

YWCA Metro Vancouver maintains relationships with and memberships in affiliated Y and community service organizations. Series documents YWCA Metro Vancouver’s engagement with these organizations via: participation in their meetings and conventions; sending representatives to stand for the organization on committees and commissions; receipt of the organizations’ disseminated materials including annual reports, occasional reports, and newsletters; and correspondence.

Records include: reports, meeting minutes, memoranda, publications, and other records from YWCA Metro Vancouver’s engagement with affiliated Y and community service organizations.

Series is arranged into four subseries: 1. British Columbia community service organizations; 2. YWCA of Canada and local Canadian YWCAs; 3. World YWCA and international YWCAs; and 4. YMCAs.

Outreach and promotion

Series encompasses material created as YWCA Metro Vancouver conducts activities to gain public awareness and drive community engagement. Activities represented include communications, product marketing, event planning, and compiling and presenting YWCA Metro Vancouver histories.

Programming

Series encompasses YWCA Metro Vancouver’s programming for YWCA members and YWCA program participants. Activities represented include the planning, promotion, operation, documentation, and evaluation of programs.

Series is arranged in three subseries: 1. Fitness and adult education; 2. YaWaCa; and 3. General programming.

Social and community services

Series documents YWCA Metro Vancouver’s social and community service programs. Among the YWCA’s service focus areas are: affordable housing provided by the YWCA Hotel/Residence, Housing Registry, YWCA housing communities, and short-term and transitional houses; counselling; daycare and early learning; and employment guidance. Although available to members, these services are targeted at individuals, groups, and families identified by the YWCA as vulnerable and facing systemic social and economic barriers. The YWCA has geared its services towards: disabled individuals and their families, homeless youth, immigrant women, single mothers, survivors of violence and/or abuse, and teenage mothers, among others. Activities represented include: setting up and planning particular services; managing, running, and evaluating those services; and communicating with current and potential clients about services offered.

Records consist of reports, studies, meeting minutes, memoranda, correspondence, publications, and other material arising from the YWCA’s planning, evaluation, and management of its social and community services.

Photographs

Series consists of photographs and other material maintained by YWCA Metro Vancouver in a separate physical arrangement from its other records. The series features: staff, volunteers, members, and clients participating in YWCA services, programming, and events; headshots and profiles of YWCA personnel; the interiors, exteriors, and amenities of YWCA buildings and facilities; slide presentations of YWCA images; and compilations of photographs, both original and copies, for YWCA Metro Vancouver history research. These photographs were likely taken for a variety of purposes, including publicity, internal administrative use, progress reports, and general documentation of activities.

Records include photographs, negatives, slides, photograph albums, and other graphic materials maintained by the YWCA separately from other formats of material.

Fundraising and donor relations

YWCA Metro Vancouver engages in fundraising from the community on several fronts: general, ongoing fundraising for the organization as a whole; fundraising for specific services and programs; events put on with the main mission of fundraising; and Capital Campaigns to fund large-scale building renovations, refurbishment, and/or purchases. Material in this series arises from YWCA Metro’s fundraising campaigns, fundraising events, and donor relations.

Records consist of reports, correspondence, memoranda, donor lists, publications, presentations, and other records arising from planning, publicizing, and carrying out fundraising activities.
