History
LING How was born in China on October 26, 1883. He came to Canada in 1900, joining his brother George LING in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia where they operated a farm. Ling How was misidentified as George Ling upon arrival.
Eventually, How went out on his own, buying a plot of land in Halifax to grow vegetables and flowers for market.
How was hardworking; he used a horse and buggy to deliver his produce right to his customers door and was known as a man who was always jovial and laughing.
The exact opposite was true at home. Like many men of his time, How was a strict, serious father and almost never showed affectionate to his wife or children. His first wife, who lived in China, died during childbirth.
In Canada, in 1918, at age 35, he married 16-year-old Chong Toy Sing in Vancouver. Together they had seven children.
In 1939, How sold his farm and opened a restaurant in Halifax. It did well during the war years, but business fell off sharply post-war. He sold the restaurant and bought a rooming house.
How died on March 8, 1963, some six months after his wife passed away.
