George van Wilby fonds

Fonds consists of 370 black and white negatives taken between 1917 and 1924. The images are primarily of UBC students at the University's original Fairview campus. There are also shots of faculty members. As well as posed individual shots of students, there are many photographs of various student activities including the annual class picnic. Although most of the photographs are not identified they are very important for collectively documenting student life at the University in the late teen’s and early 1920s.

Fonds also includes personal correspondence and professional correspondence concerning Gnup's responsibilities as coach of the UBC Thunderbirds. Buck organized most of his papers into subject files relating to his activities and arranged them in alphabetical order. The files, in many instances, contain correspondence, reports and memos. The fonds also includes maps, plans, and posters, as well as photographs.

Fonds consists of various revised constitutions, minutes, annual reports of the Club, its committees and interest groups, financial records (including bound ledgers), correspondence, membership lists, newsletters, programmes (including photographs used in their production), a videotape of the Club's 75th-anniversary banquet, and scrapbooks. The increase in Club membership parallels the growth and development of the University. The records reflect many of the changes which have taken place over the years. They provide an insight into the concerns and activities of educated women through two world wars and the depression and record some of their contributions to university life.

The archivist grouped the files into fifteen identifiable series. The original file titles have been retained.

The records of the Department of Athletics and Recreation fonds are representative of the athletics side of the Department of Athletics and Recreation. While athletics and recreation fall under the same department, in practice, they operate independently of one another. Their textual records are also physically held at separate locations. Surviving records in the Department of Athletics and Recreation fonds are broadly representative of the achievements of UBC athletes and teams. Far less extensive, are the types of administrative documents produced or accumulated in the course of the day-to-day business of the department. Examples of records present in the fonds include programs, historical research, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, team rosters, scoresheets, profile write-ups, yearbooks, media guides, correspondence, agendas, training schedules, coaching handbooks, travel itineraries, and ephemera.
