Native Housing

Series reflects both Leonard and Kitty Maracle’s interest and involvement in Aboriginal housing associations, corporations and committees, building projects and housing issues. Records include correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, proposals, notices, memorandums, financial records, maps, plans, and publications.

Centers

Series consists of records pertaining to various centers, primarily Aboriginal community and friendship centers, as well as centers of education, employment and rehabilitation. Records include correspondence, newsletters, reports, financial records, flyers publications, negatives and photographs.

Indian Clubs

Series consists of records pertaining to various Aboriginal clubs, including the Indian and Metis Educational Club and the Vancouver Indian War Dance Club. Records include correspondence, agendas, reports, notes, and publications.

Government

Series consists of records pertaining to governmental departments and ministries, government representatives, legislature and government funding sources. Records include reports, notes, newsletters, and financial records.

Printed Material, Audiovisual Materials and Miscellaneous

Series consists of various publications, other printed materials, audiovisual materials and miscellaneous objects and ephemera either created or collected by Leonard and Kitty, or their daughter Aiyyana Maracle. Records include books, booklets, magazines, magazine clippings, pamphlets, newspapers, newspaper clippings, maps, photographs and negatives, birthday cards, personal correspondence (including a letter to Kitty from Margaret Trudeau dated 1975), postcards, calendars, notebooks, a scrapbook, and audio recordings on magnetic tapes. Ephemeral and miscellaneous materials include a bumper sticker, a souvenir coin and scrap bits of paper, in addition to unidentifiable materials.

Program and policy - CCF

Series consists ofpamphlets, reports, and other textual material outlining the program and policies of the Co-operative Commonwealth Association, both provincially and nationally . Includes a memorandum on CCF agricultural policy, 1943, and a 1941 campaign brochure for Shepherd outlining the CCF program.

Elections: candidates material

Series consists of material related to the CCF provincial election campaigns and platforms of 1945 and 1952, and Shepherd's participation in the 1945 election, including material outlining his own platform.

Provincial conventions

Series consists of reports, resolutions, and nominations related to the provincial conventions of the British Columbia section of the CCF in 1939, 1944, 1953, and 1957.

Time Book

The series consists of exercise books, cash books, journals, account books, record books or notebooks. Copan divided each book up into sections in order to keep a detailed account of his activities throughout the years. Entries include date, company worked for, ship name and/or wharf/dock location, type of shift and payment amounts.

Other Indian and Metis Associations

Series consists of records pertaining to the Maracle’s involvement in several Aboriginal associations and organizations, such as the Native Council of Canada, American Indians United and the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs. Records include correspondence, meeting minutes, flyers, clippings, newsletters, notices, briefs, financial records, reports, proposals, speeches and publications.

Operational files

The series consists of material relating to the main functions of the office, which include the administration and day-to-day business of the Union. Primary functions consisted of administrative and financial operations as well as advocacy and bargaining on behalf of the union members. Record types in the series include collective agreements, reports, financial audits, legal documents, bulletins, constitutions, correspondence, minutes of meetings, and further related records to the unions operations.

Application, dues payment, and transfer records

Series is comprised of 10cm x 15cm cards and a partial members' list. These cards serve the sole function of providing information about individual members. Cards record various information such as a member's full name, address, occupation, name of employer, dues payments, age, birth date, and date of transfer and retirement . The cards are arranged alphabetically by the surnames of the Union's members.

Arbitration cases reference files

Series consists of copies of other unions' and locals ' arbitration case books, as well as their master agreements. Each book includes the proceedings of each case brought before an arbitration board or an individual arbitrator. There are also memorandum to, and interpretations of, some of the agreements.

General reference material

Series includes reference information about the IWA International Organization . As well, there are Safety Conference minutes, and small booklets which consist of copies of contracts and master agreements, grading rules, constitutions and bylaws, and general union literature.

Correspondence, personal papers, and misc. publications

Series consists of the personal papers of Stephen, including correspondence, family photographs, historical family records, memorabilia, and an assortment of publications (magazines, newspapers, clippings, brochures, pamphlets, program guides, and more). These materials reflect the life of the creator, her family, friendships, interests, and work as a writer and educator. Series also includes materials related to Stephen's involvement with the Canadian Women's Press Club and the Vancouver branch of the Canadian Authors Association.

Reporting and writing for radio

Series consists of the materials produced by Stephen as part of her work as a radio reporter and producer. Most of the records are transcripts and drafts of stories written and presented by Stephen on her show "Story Time", which was sponsored by the British Columbia Parent Teachers' Federation and aired on the radio station CKMO. The main focus of this show was Indigenous stories and British Columbia history. Also included are transcripts of segments written for another show of Stephen's called "Indian Trails," as well as news and current events stories researched and reported by Stephen for other radio programs. This series also includes radio dramas written by Stephen.

Scrapbooks

Series consists of two scrapbooks of clippings (photographs) of actors and actresses with handwritten notes on film performances.

Langara Fishing and Packing Company, Ltd.

Series consists of administrative records of the Langara Fishing and Packing Company, Ltd., including: asset and liability reports; agreements and charters, predominantly with owners and operators of fishing boats; memos; tax receipts; inspection reports; and insurance papers.

Nootka Packing Company, Ltd.

Series consists of administrative records of the Nootka Packing Company, Ltd., including: daily cannery reports and daily fish meal and oil reports (these in three bound ledgers); invoices; memorandums of agreement; and correspondence with various outside companies, predominantly regarding the purchase and lease of equipment.

Correspondence

For correspondence found in the first accrual of materials, letters were divided into two sub-series: Incoming and outgoing letters. Incoming letters were arranged alphabetically according to sender; outgoing letters were arranged chronologically.

Loose letters from the second accrual were filed according to the existing arrangement of ingoing and outgoing letters. Files that had been arranged and named by the creator, meanwhile, were retained in name and order.

The Need of a "Rational Almanac" [textual record] / by Moses B. Cotsworth, F.G .S., of York, England; printed for the Royal Society of Canada

Item is a pamphlet containing the paper that Cotsworth presented to the Royal Society of Canada . Sir Sandford Fleming's introductory address to the Royal Society of Canada is also included in the pamphlet. Cotsworth discusses the history of calendars, the difficulties inherent in the Gregorian calendar, and the benefits and ease of changing to a calendar having thirteen months of four weeks each.

Records Relating to Egypt (Pyramids, Sphinx)

Series consists of drawings of pyramids, notes, posters in preparation, and photographs (with the accompanying negatives) taken in Egypt of the Sphinx and the pyramids. Some of the diagrams of the pyramids include astronomical measurements. Cotsworth used these diagrams to illustrate how the Egyptians measured time. These diagrams were then included in pamphlets written by Cotsworth.

Records Relating to Miscellaneous Subjects

Series consists of diagrams, pictures, pamphlets, maps, a newspaper article, postcards, articles, published journals (both loose and bound), and photographs. The records have been organised according to subject matter because they did not fit into any of the other series. They have been organised in the following way: clocks, glaciers/geological data, obelisks, picture postcards, published journals and other published materials/pamphlets, published material, miscellaneous maps, miscellaneous photographs, and published journals (bound volumes). Most, if not all, of the information in this series has been used by Cotsworth in his efforts to try to bring about changes to the Gregorian calendar. He used the information in his publications on calendar reform.

Zimmer Tower: Astronomical Clock and Studio: Supplement to the Illustrated Guide of Lierre (Belgium) / Louis Zimmer; published by the "Gidsenbond," Belgium

Item is a pamphlet, which describes the clock tower that Zimmer constructed as clockmaker to the Royal Court in Belgium. He finished the tower in 1930 and presented it to the city of Lierre on the occasion of Belgium's centennial anniversary of independence. The pamphlet describes the twelve dials built onto the face of the Centenary Clock. It explains what the dials mean, how they function, and how measurements are taken. It includes diagrams of the clock dials as well as charts and other diagrams. It also describes dials found in the Astronomic Studio. These include thirteen dials, dealing with the subdivision of time, as well as other dials representing astronomical phenomena. Zimmer has included a dial that functions according to Cotsworth's 13-month calendar.

Record

Series consists of three files containing timber license records . One file contains a range of documents including timber price sheets, export lumber standards, B.C. pulp and paper industry details, grading rules for different timber species, MacMillan & Bloedel inter-company correspondences, and a speech given by W. de M. Marler.

Organizing

The series consists of material relating to the organizing activities of SORWUC. Primary organizing activities included pamphleting, formation of regional committees, conducting research, educating current members and the public, negotiating contracts, organizing strikes and picket lines, creation and distribution of fliers and newsletters, and drafting of union by-laws. Record types include: correspondence, membership forms, sign-up sheets, fliers, newsletters, pamphlets, contract proposals, minutes of meetings, press clippings, press releases. Files 8-16 to 8-63 and files 9-4 to 9-45 contain records of the various organizing committees at different bank branches. Records in these files relate to branches of the following banks: Bank of Nova Scotia, Bank of Montreal, Royal Bank, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, and Toronto Dominion.

Graphic materials

Series consists primarily of family photographs. Other photograph subjects include scenes of Vancouver, particularly Stanley Park, as well as images and objects of historical interest. A small amount of textual material,a drawing, and a print are also included.Files names and order have been respected where they existed.

Memorabilia

Series consists of certificates, notes, correspondence, brochures, printed materials, membership cards, recipes, and other documents accumulated or created by Hood.

Church and Scottish societies organisational documents

Series consists of correspondence, financial records, meeting minutes, pamphlets, programmes, clippings, and other documents related to the Scottish Dramatic Society, the St. Andrews and Caledonian Society, and the Central Presbyterian Church in Vancouver, and Hood's involvement therein.

Evidentiary

Series consists of records related to the research and legal actions taken for and against the development of the ROSS Dam between the the R.O.S.S. Committee, U.S. Government, and other related interests groups. Records consist primarily of correspondences, testimonies, court exhibits, and briefs. Items are arranged based on original received order.

Subject

Series consists of files created by the author pertaining to the writing of his novel but not to specific chapters. With the files there are handwritten notes, pictures, court documents, and newspaper clippings.

Book and Manuscript Collecting Records

Series consists of notebooks, transcripts of literary works, a card catalogue, manuscripts, correspondence, financial documents, prospectuses, newspaper clippings, certificates, and other documents made or received by Colbeck in the course of his many activities as a book dealer and book collector and in his work at the University of British Columbia Library.

Diaries

Series contains business diaries written by William G. Swan that record details of his meetings and contracts with people and organizations he worked with through his career.

General Programming

This series consists of administrative and program files from 1973-1983. This includes music, performance, dance, video, and exhibition grants and projects. After 1983, New Music, Performance Arts, dance, Media and Video, and Exhibition Program and General Administrative records are filed with their respective program series (Administrative, Exhibitions, Front Magazine, Luminous Sites, Media Arts and Video Art Program, New Music, Performance Art, Publicity and Promotional Materials).

Canadian Pacific Railway Company

Series consists of records related to the operations of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, which was incorporated in 1881. The Chung Collection contains a wealth of unique materials related to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and details its extensive operations ranging from the construction of the transcontinental railway to the development of new divisions to the experiences of travellers on C.P.R. ships, trains, and planes. The records in this series include photographs, historical documents, books, maps, pamphlets, and artefacts, and include a number of very rare items such as Alfred Waddington's "Overland Route through British North America" (1868).

This series has been arranged into eight subseries: the Canadian Pacific Railway, C.P.R. Steamships, Travel and Tourism with the C.P.R., the British Columbia Coast Steamship Service, Artwork and images of the C.P.R., C.P.R. artefacts, Working for the C.P.R., and the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway Company.

Lectures, presentations, and interviews

The series features lectures, presentations, and interviews that Bruce Devitt gave at meetings of institutions in which he actively participated as both a member and chair of various committees at the local, provincial, and national levels.

Survey Photography

The survey photography series consists of photographic material compiled by Devitt over decades of field work in British Columbia. The albums include black and white photos as well as multiple sets of 35mm. slides. These color slides cover the evolution from natural regeneration, bare root nurseries to tree planting. Also featured are processes for tree seed registration, tree selection and grafting into seed orchards for seed extraction and storage. The series also includes photograph prints of people and events related to the forestry industry in British Columbia.

Bill Young

The Bill Young series include a compilation of speeches by Bill Young, B.C.'s chief forester from 1978 – 1984 in addition to research files from Ralph Schmidt.

Media and Publicity

Series consists of an assemblage of clippings in 48 scrapbooks collected by Dosanjh and staff from local and foreign newspapers, magazines, and online sources. Individual items have been cut from their original source material and pasted into scrapbooks with date and publication data attached. A range of features including political comics, news articles, and opinion pieces document his advocacy and political career. Additionally, they present media reaction and opinions regarding various political decisions, announcements, and issues brought forth by the subject.

Clippings from two large Metro Vancouver print media establishments, The Vancouver Sun and The Province, make up the bulk of the pasted items. Smaller local publications and online news media sources such as The Georgia Straight, Global BC, and CTV News also feature.

Specific foreign language clippings form distinct compilations. Punjabi and Hindi news from local and Indian sources include The Indo-Canadian Voice, The Punjab Guardian, Des Pardes, Ajitweekly, Jagbani, Punjab Kesari, Daily Nawan Zamana, Chandigarh Bani, and Dainik Bhaskar. Chinese language papers are limited to Metro Vancouver based publications such as The Asian Star, SingTao Daily, Ming Pao Daily News, and World Journal.

Advertisements are compiled into standalone books. Dating from 1985 to 2009 and sourced from locally published newspapers, they relate to the promotion of Dosanjh’s law firm, political election campaigns, and well wishes to members of the public regarding holidays.

Individual scrapbooks are identified by the date of their contents in day-month-year format.

Due to the nature of the scrapbooks’ content, the clippings relate to topics found in the Provincial Political series and the Federal Political series.

Inverness Cannery School

Series consists of records relating to a school operated by Inverness Cannery. Includes correspondence, school order forms, reports on annual general meetings, applications for position of teacher, school receipts, and monthly reports prepared for department of education.

Publications, Pamphlets and News Clippings

Series consists of several years' worth of news clippings in relation to the Sook traps the Inverness Cannery used to catch saltwater salmon. Newsclippings include such sources as: The Daily Colonist, Western Fisheries, Vancouver Sun, Vancouver Province, Pacific Coast News, Victoria Daily Times, Seattle Post Intelligencer, Seattle Daily Times. Also included are copies of Fishermen’s Weekly, and a Gordon & Belyea Hardware Catalogue., a labeling machine catalogue, and several pamphlets relating to taxes and military efforts. Series also contains United Allied Fishermen and Associated Workers Union pamphlets.
