[Research material regarding forestry history]

Series contains records pertaining to Gerry Burch's research on the history of the forestry industry in British Columbia. Burch's research was primarily done in his capacity as a member of the Forest History Association of British Columbia. The focus on this research is the biographical details of individuals employed by the Forestry Industry from 1930 to 1970 and features biographical notes, correspondence, photographs, and cassette tape recordings of interviews with individuals as conducted by Burch.

This series contains newspaper clippings and printed material to support the writing of a non-fiction book, The Golden Revolution, about retirement in the 1990’s.

There is background material of a similar nature gathered to aid the writing of the novel, The Statement, about National Socialism, the Carter Presidency, commercial flights, and aircraft schematics.

Research material

This series contains records relating to research on the topic of the Santo Tomas Internment Camp and other internment camps. Research was conducted by many but assembled by Leonard McCann. Contents include bibliography lists, photocopied documents and clippings, interviews, photographs and notes.

The slides in this series depict images of cartoon drawings that were made by internees during internment are were featured in the internment camp newsletters. Also depicted in the slides are images of the Santo Tomas University and drawn maps of the grounds. Slides were made after internment.

This series contains materials accumulated by Ian McDonald related to the writing of his book “The Red Baron of IBEW Local 213” written about his father, Les McDonald. Materials include digital sound recordings of interviews, research articles, notebooks, consent forms, a draft royalty agreement, a draft chapter and a press marketing questionnaire.

Series consists of research data, statistics, and bibliographies gathered by Knight for his thesis and other published works and articles . Research data includes notes, proposals, outlines, glossaries of terms, and reviews concerning various topics, including native peoples of Canada and the Cauca Valley, Columbia.

Research and resource collection

Records in this collection are primarily publications produced by Greenpeace International to raise awareness of Canadian and international environmental issues, with a particular focus on deforestation and climate change. Other publications include materials produced by other environmental non-governmental organizations, governments, and First Nations. The series includes magazines with a focus on forestry and the environment. The series also includes materials acquired by Greenpeace Canada that provide information on the management of forests in different biospheres of the World. The series contains no subseries and only file level arrangement of records exists. File titles are based on the content of items.

Research and reference resources

The series contains the resources that Vancouver Status of Women (VSW) collected to support its own research projects and the needs of its visitors. Additionally, it includes VSW briefs, press releases, and reports that were inter-filed with research and reference resources. Reference resources were gathered from a wide variety of local, provincial, national, and international sources from the 1970s to 2008. Sources from which resources originate include the National Action Committee for the Status of Women, the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women, local women centers, and other organizations committed to anti-oppression work. Subjects that are addressed frequently in these resources include the following: childcare, gender discrimination in the public education system, community services for women, pensions for women, inadequate unemployment and welfare rates, pornography, prison, sex work, the anti-choice movement, pay equity, violence against women, corporate globalization, and anti-racism.

Subject files in the series were originally arranged in distinct, alphabetized sets spanning two accruals. This order has been maintained physically and intellectually. The physical order in which all other records were received has been maintained as well; original order has been re-constituted intellectually. Record types represented in the series include the following: subject files containing newspaper and magazine clippings, correspondence, and press releases and briefs from other organizations; VSW briefs, press releases, and reports; print copies of academic journals; books; magazines; reports, publications, and grey literature from other organizations; a “Women’s Kit” featuring educational aids that counter sexist stereotypes; and cassette tapes bearing audio recordings in honour of International Women’s Day.

Research and project development

This series contains material regarding the process of creating printed publications. Material primarily relates to the work of Robert Reid and includes correspondence with clients, development materials and printed samples. Large hardcover mock-ups of publications or potential publications are included in this series.

Also included in this series is material acquired by Robert Reid that was likely to have played a role in his research and developmental process. This material includes collections of printed material (like hotel labels, packaging labels, bank notes and newspaper clippings). It is likely that this material served as reference or inspiration in regard to his own work. Prominent topics include golf courses, currency, World War II, and Canadian art.

Research and creative notes

Series consists of notes, notebooks/journals, press clippings, photographs, books and sketches that are not directly linked to a specific project. From about 1990 to 1994 Coupland kept made daily entries in notebooks. These notebooks contain Coupland’s thoughts, observations and concepts for future subject. This series also contains material related to an unwritten research project that Coupland began in 1992.

Series documents Thomas’ research into the folk songs and history of British Columbia. Material includes articles, lyrics, music sheets, photographs, and music catalogues. The series is arranged into the six following subseries: history, music, people, photographs, record catalogue, and song files.

Series consists of the research that Roy Stokes did about the history of Le Fanu. Series includes familial history dating Le Fanu’s lineage back to 1576 as well as his descendants; newspapers, articles, and book chapters; bibliographic notes and general queries; theatrical adaptions of Le Fanu’s work “Carmilla”; and photographs and photo negatives of Beaumaris, Isle of Anglesey where Le Fanu spent time as a child and later in life.

Series includes research conducted by Rachel Epstein and for her by others. Research materials include: articles, book chapters, and research reports (written by students). Articles are frequently from the Labour Gazette about domestic and farm workers, including reports on working conditions and worker testimonials. Book chapters are mostly written by Studs Terkel. One file contains pay stubs and time sheets for workers of a company called Comcare.

Requests and finances

This series contains records relating to the requests for funding from various projects and individuals. Material pertains primarily to the financial aspects of this process, but also concerns applications and legal matters.

Series consists of annotated reports and presentations made by Rush to various CCP events from 1965-1987. The notebooks and unbound files which make up this series also contain his personal annotations made during these events.

Materials consist of reports from the Market Committee outlines shingles in Northwest and Eastern Canada, a copy of a paper by R. H. Alexander, net price information concerning the Prairie and Eastern Canadian markets, the development of forest policy in British Columbia, prices with shipping weights, and rail lists. Also included is a detailed report on lumber exports by product, lumber exports by species, distribution figures, and production in the post-war Canadian market. Also include are the annual reports of the activities of different BCLMA committees for each year.

Reporting and writing for radio

Series consists of the materials produced by Stephen as part of her work as a radio reporter and producer. Most of the records are transcripts and drafts of stories written and presented by Stephen on her show "Story Time", which was sponsored by the British Columbia Parent Teachers' Federation and aired on the radio station CKMO. The main focus of this show was Indigenous stories and British Columbia history. Also included are transcripts of segments written for another show of Stephen's called "Indian Trails," as well as news and current events stories researched and reported by Stephen for other radio programs. This series also includes radio dramas written by Stephen.

Rentals and finances

This series contains records relating primarily to the management of properties owned or rented by the Boag Foundation. It also contains records relating to a small number of projects that took place in the late 60s and early 70s, as well as income taxes of that time.

Renaerts v. Vancouver General Hospital

Series consists of legal documents, clippings and notes related to the malpractice suit on behalf of Ximena Renaerts, who had suffered brain damage when she was born, heard in the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1998.

Series consists of correspondence, newsletters, reports, lists, organizational and other records relating to the Community Health Nurses’ Group’s participation in the Canadian Health Nurses’ Association of Canada.

This series includes the records of both Canadian and American organizations/ governmental bodies whose business is directly related to the FVOA The organizations represented include; the Fisheries Development Council (1956-1957, 1959, 1961-1962, 1964), records consist of correspondence, minutes, press releases, reports, and information concerning the Department of Fisheries; the Dominion Bureau of Statistics (1957-1959, records include reports on fish freezing and stocks; the United States Department of Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Bureau of Commercial Fisheries (1958-1962), records include frozen fish reports and annual reports; and the Department of Fisheries (1948-1973), fish marketing reports, regulations for inspections, collection of statistics, storage and refrigeration, and reports, correspondence relating to improving quality standards, and a survey map of the Bay of Fundy area ca. 1926-1927. There are also records of the United Fisherman and Allied Workers Union (UFAWU), 1939-1966, which include policy statements, memoranda, press releases, newspaper clippings and documents relating to grievances. In addition, there is a copy of a speech given at the UFAWU's 1954 annual meeting by the Right Honorable James Sinclair. The minutes, releases, allocation plan and motions of the Fisheries Management Advisory Council (MAC) are also included in this series. Another folder contains the transcript of a 1957 inquiry brought against the FVOA under the Combines Investigation Act following complaints from the UFAWU and the Native Brotherhood. The folders are arranged according to the organization's names and subjects.

Reid, Collins and Associates

Series consists of documents related to Hubert's work as part of Reid, Collins and Associates, a Vancouver based forestry consulting company where Bunce worked for 21 years, starting in 1972. Bunce's work with Reid Collins was largely in British Columbia, but also included international projects. Materials in the series include collected research, final reports, maps, and promotional material for the company.

Series includes two subseries that include files from the larger bodies of work from Bunce's time with Reid Collins: "Smelter, air pollution, and forest health research" (which includes documents related to research on behalf of Alcan into the effect of the company's aluminum smelter on forest growth). and "International work."

Rehearsal, Preparation, Production, and Leisure Photographs

Series contains photographs of Irving Guttman coaching, directing, and socializing with operatic singers and other stakeholders in the opera scene. Prominently featured in the series are photographs of the opera Norma, which Mr. Guttman directed at least four times; Tosca, which Mr. Guttman directed at least three times; and the operas Aida and Traviatta, which Mr. Guttman directed at least twice each. The series also contains photographs from Irving Guttman directed productions of Madam Butterfly, Daughter of the Regiment, The Barber of Seville, Carmen, Boheme, Faust, Manon, Tales of Hoffman, Hansel & Gretal, Lucrezia Borgia, Othello, and The Merry Widow.

Regulations and legislation

This series consists of copies of various fishing or water related regulations and statutes adopted or in development. The Bills include; Bill C-2 (the administration and development of certain fishing and recreational harbours in Canada); Bill C-6 and C-61 (Canadian ports); Bill C-38 (Act amending the Fisheries Act); and Bill C-41 (Act providing a maritime code for Canada and amending the Canada Shipping Act). There are also reports, studies, proposals and correspondence from both the F.V.O.A. and governmental bodies relating to the above regulations and legislation, the Canadian Vessel Construction Act, and the National Research Council of Canada. The fishing and water related regulations are arranged by date; regulations to 1951, 1952-1955, 1953-1962, and include not only copies of regulations but reports, bulletins, proposals and correspondence as well. The folders are arranged by date.

Registration and identification certificates

Series consists of Chinese Immigration (C.I.) registration and identification certificates related to implementing Canada’s Chinese Immigration Act that was law from 1885 to 1947, with amendments made in 1887, 1892, 1900, 1903, and 1923. Certificates were first issued to register and identify Chinese persons entering Canada. This function was expanded with the 1923 amendment requiring registration and identification of all Chinese persons residing in the country, immigrant and Canadian-born.

The series includes the most common C.I. certificates issued before the 1923 Chinese Immigration Act banned practically all further Chinese entry, therefore commonly known as the Chinese Exclusion Act:
-The C.I.5 certificate issued in relation to the head tax payment required for Chinese entry to Canada, commonly known as the head tax certificate. Early versions of the certificate in use before 1912 are present.
-C.I.36 certificate issued in exchange for a C.I.5 certificate issued before 1912 that had no photograph.
-C.I.30 certificate issued to a Chinese person entering Canada belonging to a class with exemption from paying the head tax.
-C.I.28 certificate issued to replace a lost or destroyed C.I.5 or C.I.30 certificate.

The series includes a large number of C.I.45 certificates created in 1923 and 1924. The certificate was used to implement Section 18 of the 1923 Chinese Immigration Act that required the registration of all Chinese residing in Canada within twelve months. It was issued as proof of registration of a Canadian-born Chinese who did not possess an entry certificate for the registration stamp.

Also included in the series are samples of lesser-known C.I. certificates and records, including the C.I.4, C.I.10, C.I.18 and C.I.18a, C.I.46, and C.I.50.

The series includes a small number of N.F.63 certificates related to Chinese entry to the Dominion of Newfoundland. Newfoundland’s Act Respecting the Immigration of Chinese Persons (commonly known as the Newfoundland Chinese Immigration Act) was in force from 1906 until Newfoundland and Laborador joined Confederation in 1949.

A small number of certificates relates to birth in Canada, travel documentation, registration as overseas Chinese with the Chinese government, and Canadian citizenship received following the repeal of the Chinese Immigration Act in 1947.

Series consists of carbon typescripts and printed copies of briefs and reports written by G.D. during her term as Regional Director for Area I of the Comox-Strathcona Regional District (1973-1978) ; some correspondence.

Series consists of news and other print media clippings and photocopies concerning members of the corporation and/or the Spanish Civil War, back issues of the corporation's news bulletin, newsletters of associated organizations, a collection of handwritten letters including 5 to and from Spain dated 1938, a number of fabric insignias of the International Brigades, a poster of the "Association de expressos Y Represaliados Politicos" bearing inscriptions and signatures on the back, photocopy of proceedings in the Ontario legislature regarding the campaign for official government recognition, and other related materials.

Series consists of various resources that have been made, received, or collected by the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC) to be used for information, research, study, advocacy, or collaborative purposes. Records relate to either the Japanese Canadian community or to other ethnic groups. This includes photocopies of articles, textbook chapters, newspaper clippings, and other publications, copies of government documentation, documents from studies conducted, reports, demographic records, census records, booklets, and other related materials.

Series consists of background information, including minutes, agendas, reports and published material, mainly accumulated as a result of membership in provincial and national Chambers of Commerce, and affiliation with other organizations having common concerns and activities such as the Fraser Valley Tourist Association and Township of Langley.

The author arranged the files according to chapter and within each file there are smaller files, news clippings, handwritten noted, interviews, and background information relating to the chapter topic.
