The fonds comprised of two series of records. The first series, History of Medicine at UBC (1936-1976), contains correspondence, memoranda, and reports relating to the proposed establishment of an Institute of Preventive Medicine (1936-1940). It also includes records associated with the preparation and execution of the Medical Education survey (1946), correspondence and reports relating to the Department of Bacteriology and Preventive Medicine (1951-1955), and a history of the UBC Medical School (1976). Records of the Royal Society of Canada comprise the second series. A large portion of this material reflects the efforts of the Society to participate in the formulation and implementation of a national science policy beginning from the mid-1960s through to the early 1970s.

Series consists of pamphlets, correspondence, calendars, newsletters, minutes, memoranda, printed material, clippings, and reports about the Royal Society of Canada. A large portion of this material reflects the efforts of the Society to participate in the formulation and implementation of a national science policy from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s. Other topics addressed in the records include an attempt to organize a Federation of Learned Societies (1966-69) under the auspices of the Society and Dolman's participation in the selection and subsequent ceremonies associated with the Order of Canada under his position on the Governor-General's Nomination Committee as President of the Royal Society of Canada.

James and Constance Daniells sous-fonds

James MacFarlane Daniells was born in England in 1867. He came to Canada before the turn of the century but returned to England after a short time. In 1910, after some business reverses, he emigrated with his family to Victoria, B.C. where he worked as a builder, first in James Bay, then on Cook Street, and eventually he built a home on Cochrane Street where he lived until his death in 1951. Mr. Daniells was an overseer in the Gospel Hall and was a devout student of the Bible. Constance Maynard Daniells, nee Stevens, was born in England in 1876. In 1901 she married James Daniells, and they had one son, James Roy Daniells, who was born in 1902. She died in 1957. Constance and James joined the Plymouth Brethren in Victoria. The Plymouth Brethren were a sect of Christian believers originating in the early 19th century in Ireland. Brethren ideas of baptism were differing (RD was baptised by immersion) and they expected the second coming of Christ. The Lord's Supper was observed each Sunday. The Brethren had a tendency to follow new leaders and to divide to form new congregations. They were basically fundamentalist and considered the Scriptures the only true guide. There were no officers in the Victoria Hall. James Daniells was one of the "overseers" for a time. The privileges and duties of the ministry depended on the ability of the members.
The sous-fonds consists of correspondence (including many letters from Roy Daniells), journals, legal documents, financial papers, maps, greeting cards, newspaper clippings, verses and family information of James and Constance Daniells. There is also a series of records relating to the Plymouth Brethren, both in London and in Victoria, B.C. including incorporation documents, tracts, sermons, notes, hymn books, bibles, booklets etc. Photographs and postcards have been kept with the Roy Daniells collections.

Jean Coulthard fonds

The fonds consists of Coulthard's incoming family and general correspondence, correspondence from noted English composer Elizabeth Poston, financial records, biographical information, printed material and clippings documenting her involvement in the Canadian and International music communities as an advocate, educator and composer. Also included are original manuscripts of Coulthard's compositions and published and unpublished sound recordings of her work performances. The fonds also contain scrapbooks assembled by Coulthard's mother, Jean Robinson Coulthard, between 1898 and 1929, family photographs, and a photograph album compiled by her father, Dr. Walter Coulthard, depicting the Rossland area (ca. 1902).
Fonds are arranged into two sous-fonds: Jean Coulthard sous-fonds and Coulthard family sous-fonds. Correspondence Series

Series comprised incoming personal and professional correspondence relating to Coulthard's roles as teacher, adjudicator and composer. Also included are some drafts of outgoing correspondence. Series primarily arranged alphabetically and chronologically based on Coulthard's filing system. Series includes two sub-series: a) Coulthard-Poston Correspondence (1948-1979); b) Family Correspondence (1888-1998).

Family Correspondence sub-series

Sub-series consists of correspondence between Jean Coulthard and family members (husband Donald Adams and daughter Jane Adams), and early correspondence addressed to Jean Coulthard's parents, Walter and Jean Robinson. Sub-series arranged chronologically.

History of Education Research Collection

Collection consists of materials which deal with two different subject areas of interest to Sutherland. One consists of microfilm records relating to the establishment of the Macdonald Institute, which later merged with two other colleges to form the University of Guelph. The other series consists of photocopies of records assembled by Sutherland for various research projects on the history of education.

John Ridington material series

Series consists of a handwritten journal created by John Ridington during his family's trip to Canada by ship (1889), publications and copies of sketches by Ridington, clippings relating to Ridington, and bound copies of his speeches and articles (1911-1945).

Memorabilia series

Series consists of various degrees, diplomas and certificates awarded to L.S. Klinck. Also included are photographs of Klinck with other individuals and images associated with Macdonald College.

Documents related to faculties and departments, including Applied Sciences, Arts, Commerce, Forestry, Graduate Studies, VP Finance, Administrative Services, VP Faculty and Student Affairs, Dean of Women, Agricultural Sciences, Dentistry, Education, Law, Medicine, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Also present are records related to Women at UBC, - including reports on the Status of Academic and Non-Academic Women - Senate Committees and the Board of Governors. Convocation fonds

Photographs series

The series consists of photographs of Frank F. Wesbrook, family members, and other associates. They include both black and white prints and negatives of various dimensions.

Early University Records series

The series consists of correspondence (1890-1920) generated both before and during UBC's first two presidents, Frank Wesbrook and Leonard Klinck. The correspondence that predates the appointment of UBC's first President Wesbrook deals with various issues, including membership in Convocation, appointments to the Board of Governors, hiring a President and selection of a site for the University. Correspondence generated during the presidencies of Wesbrook and Klinck provides information about the University's establishment, the hiring of staff, strictures placed on the University during World War I, attempts to move the University to its eventual Point Grey campus and many other matters. Arranged chronologically by year and then alphabetically. The series also includes subject files (1904-1936), divided into pre- and post-1915 and arranged alphabetically.

Diaries series

Series consists of diaries that provide information about Frank F. Wesbrook's activities in London in 1891 and his appointments as University President between April 1914 and February 1918.

Photograph series

Series consists of photographs about the Fairbridge Farm School, members of the Logan family, the Military, scenery, Psi Upsilon, and UBC.

Photograph series

Series consists of 90 photographs, most of which are reproductions from various archives, museums, and galleries within Canada. Most of the photographs depict artists and their works, although a few are more personal. For example, the small number of Walker and Cheney photographs in 1980 and 1985 shows the close relationship between the two, as do updated photographs of Carr and Cheney. Series arrangement based on Walker's filing system.

Photograph series

Series consists of photographs received by Roy Daniells, James Daniells and Constance Daniells or created by or for them. They have been classified by family group if the information was readily available, and later by form and chronology, for detailed family names, see genealogical materials in Box 10. For other photographs in the Daniells papers, see the Coates/Cassidy subgroup and the occasional photo in the correspondence and subject file series. There are 19 cartes-de-visite, 25 cabinet portraits, c. 59 studio portraits before the turn of the century, plus 92 studio portraits pre-1950, 1 tintype, 2 glass photos, 9 professional photos of student theatre productions, circa 810 photoprints of which a large number are early, most of which are annotated, approximately 250 need more identification. The postcards noted in this series are family photo prints on postcard stock. There is a total, including photographs in albums, of slightly over 1100 photographs in this series. Combined with the Cassidy prints and others in subject files, there are circa 1500 photographs in the Daniells papers.

The series includes correspondence, legal documents, certificates, written verse, and various written memorabilia and artifacts acquired by Sedgewick and his family.

Photographs Series

Series consists of photographs, many autographed, of Jean Coulthard's colleagues. Series also includes family photographs and formal portraits of Coulthard.

Miscellaneous Items series

Series consists of certificates, musical scores, programs, receipts, and brochures about Sadler's personal life. In addition, the series includes Sadler's elementary school certificates dated 1897 to 1902.

Research series

Series consists of notes, questionnaires, articles, data, statistical analysis, codes, publications and government reports relating to Aberle's research into the Navajo and Peyotism, but also his work on kinship, language, culture and religion general.
Much of the material is undated. The remainder is arranged in chronological order.

David Aberle fonds

The fonds consists of material related to David Aberle's research activities, academic work and writing. It includes the notebooks and journals of his fieldwork beginning in 1940-41 and continuing through 1991. These consist primarily of field notes and other notes made during and after those trips. The vast majority of this material relates to Aberle's work with the Navajo in Arizona. The fonds also includes notes, articles, data and codes relating to Aberle's research into kinship and language among the Navajo, Mongols and Athapaskans, and extensive research into Navajo culture and economy. The fonds also includes correspondence on a variety of academic subjects, including Aberle's teaching materials from UBC's Department of Anthropology and Sociology. His work includes several reports written as part of the Navajo-Hopi land dispute. The fonds includes research notes for many of Aberle's essays and articles, as well as chapters and appendixes of his books.
