Varsity Outdoor Club fonds

The fonds consists of logbooks, trip register, meeting minutes, and photograph albums. The logbooks and trip registers chronicle the general activities of the Varsity Outdoor Club and the activities at their various cabin locations, with comments by many who use the facilities. The files on meeting minutes contain minutes and sometimes copies of the VOCene, the club's newsletter, or advertisement and informational material related to the organization's activities. The photograph albums include black and white and coloured prints from several decades of the club's existence.

Series consists of the minutes of V.O.C. meetings kept primarily in folders by year. There are also several minute books and copies of the newsletter the VOCene. They are organized in the order in which they were found, running reverse chronologically for the most part.

Series contains annual inventories about the purchase of books by UBC faculties. The inventories include book titles and prices listed by faculty and department.

Board Meetings series

Series consists of minutes, agendas, documents, reports, and notices of meetings. Also, it contains the Board Travel Sub-Series, which consists of letters, agendas, invitations, and documents regarding Board meetings held away from the University and the Board Retreat.

Committee series

Consists of agendas, minutes, documents, and notices of meetings for committees of the Board, particularly the Staff, Finance, and Property committees.

President's Office fonds

The fonds consists of records reflecting the myriad of activities under the President's Office. Records relating to the university's founding in its earliest days include records of the early days of Medicine at UBC. Records relating to Indigenous Peoples include the teacher training program and "Native Indian Students at UBC." Documents related to faculties and departments, including Applied Sciences, Arts, Commerce, Forestry, Graduate Studies, VP Finance, Administrative Services, VP Faculty and Student Affairs, Dean of Women, Agricultural Sciences, Dentistry, Education, Law, Medicine, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Also present are records related to Women at UBC, - including reports on the Status of Academic and Non-Academic Women - Senate Committees and the Board of Governors. Personnel records related to employees, salaries, agreements with Provincial and Territorial Governments and affiliated organizations with UBC, finances, the many UBC committees, advisory groups and records associated with the founding of UBC institutes, foundations, centres and the Faculty Club. Records also relate to teacher evaluations, student discipline, budgets, appointments, new programs, legal opinion, and grant and scholarship awards. Subject files include the Downtown Eastside and the President's Task Force to renew sports services. There are also records related to the University Endowment Lands and the UBC's planning and development of land and buildings. Records types include agreements, agendas, applications, minutes, manuals, correspondence, memorandums, evaluations, reports, summaries, subject files, statistics, speeches, policies, procedures, pamphlets and academic plans.

Microfilmed Records series

The series consists of microfilm copies of President’s Office records (1913-1970). The original President’s Office records were destroyed after the microfilm project was completed with a few exceptions. Access to this material, which is primarily arranged chronologically and alphabetically, is through a reel content list.

The microfilm index cards have been digitized and can be requested from archives staff. The microfilm reels are stored in the vault.

Personnel Records series

Materials in the "Personnel Records" section of the President's Office inventory provide a wealth of information about UBC faculty members. The "Records of Employment" and "Academic Staff Records" provide biographical material for UBC faculty dating back to the university's opening. They indicate when the person began their career, promotions and salary increases. There is also salary and promotion information in the records of the "Appointment Clerk" (1950-1958) and "Salary Records" (1968-1976). The "Recommendations Re: Staff" records (1966-1985) consists of recommendations from department heads and deans for salary increases and promotions. Also included in this section are records from the Office of Personnel and Student Services (1945-1963), Faculty Records Office (1973-1985) and some miscellaneous personnel files from the Departments of Psychiatry (1958-1984) and Anaesthesiology (1970-1983). Personnel records can also be found in the Central Office Files series.

Office of the Vice Presidency Sous-fonds

The sous-fonds of the vice president’s office consist of records made or received in fulfillment of the management and administrative requirements of the university. These records document the supervision of functions and activities of subordinate bodies; research, creation and elaboration of university programs, including academic development and community outreach; participation in presidential, university and various ad hoc committees; liaison with bodies internal to the university, such as faculty or the Alma Mater Society as well as external bodies, including, other universities, government and the private sector. The records also record budget preparation and correspondence regarding administrative matters.

There are six series in this sous-fonds dedicated to the following offices and office holders: Vice President Student and Academic Services 1986 - 2003; Vice President Administration and Finance - 1984 - 1987; Vice-President of Faculty and Student Affairs - 1975-1984; Deputy President and Bursar – William White - 1969-1984; Deputy Vice President – W.M. Armstrong - 1969-1974; Vice-President of University Academic/ Development/ Provost 1975-1985. In addition, the sous-fonds include the Vice Presidents Administrative Subject Files, 1981 series, Universities Council of British Columbia, 1974- 1983] series, and The Association of Commonwealth Universities series, 1978.

Deputy President and Bursar – William White series

The series includes four subseries, which are: Annual Financial Reports (1958-1968), Budgets (final budgets for the years 1976-1981), Correspondence Files (subject files documenting ongoing communications maintained with bodies and offices both internal and external to the University), and Capital Funds (budgets, estimates, and accompanying material including correspondence and clippings, showing financial administration of Capital projects).

Administrative Office Records series

The series is the centralized administrative subject files of the Vice President's Office. It includes correspondence, reports, memoranda, blueprints, annual reports and agreements. The arrangement is both chronological and alphabetical.

Vice President Academic and Development / Provost series

The series consists of records related to the Academic Women's Association, Chancellor, International Development Research Centre, Faculty & Student Affairs, Animal Care Report, Development of the Botanical Garden, Sub-Committee on Allocation of Computer Dollars, Academic Development, TRIUMF, Organization of Economic Cooperation & Development (OECD), Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Faculty of Applied Science, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Law, Medicine and Science. Records from President's Advisory committees, permanent, advisory, temporary and ad-hoc committees on Campus Land-Use, UBC Press, Parking Needs, Gerontology, Asian Centre, Computer Centre, Information Technology. Senate elections series

This series comprises material relating to the triennial elections for Senate positions and the special elections for Chancellor. Series includes correspondence, nomination forms, ballots, procedure outlines, reports, financial records and statements of election results. In addition, the series contains registers listing the members of Convocation.

Policies and Procedures series

Series consists of goals statements, course approvals, and a manual about the administration of policies and procedures within the Centre for Continuing Education and the university.

Projects and Studies series

Series consists of reports, submissions, position papers, questionnaires, proposals, correspondence, and other related materials about projects and studies with which the Centre for Continuing Education was involved and annual reports of the department.

Associate Vice-President Academic (Dr. A.J. McClean) series

Series consists of budgets, reports, minutes of meetings, studies, and correspondence about the period in which the Associate Vice-President Academic oversaw the Centre for Continuing Education (1988 to 1994). In addition, the Reorganization and Strategic Planning records of the early 1990s were added to this series during the 2018 accession.

Status of Women / Women's Resources Centre series

Series consists of reports, newspaper clippings, and conference proceedings originating from the Women's Resource Centre and about the 1971 Status of Women Conference and women's issues in general. It also includes records about the Task Force on Counselling and Related Services for Women Students in 1992.

Vernon C. Brink fonds

Fonds consists of records which reflect Brink's participation on the Environmental Assessment Panel (1973-1983) and The Nature Trust (1984-1987). The papers include material arranged in the following series: correspondence, teaching and research. The papers also include reference booklets and pamphlets. Each series is arranged in chronological order. The records primarily contain one large correspondence series from 1953 to 1975, with bulk dates of 1961 to 1971. The correspondence contains Brink's faculty papers intermingled with the Division of Plant Science's central office files.

Brink, Vernon C.

William C. Gibson fonds

The fonds consist of research material on various medical and historical topics and research for several of Gibson's books and articles, including his books about UBC's first president Frank F. Wesbrook, Ramon y Cajal Sherrington, and his books New Endeavour and Old Endeavour. In addition, the fonds include manuscripts of a number of Gibson articles and speeches and chapters from some of his books, records from Woodward Health Science centre, and documents for the history of the Faculty of medicine and related to Green College UBC and Oxford. Also included are records from the Agricultural Science Fund Committee (1967-1974), School of Rehabilitation Medicine (1953-1961), Master Teaching Awards Committee (1967-1972), minutes from the Council of the Faculty of Medicine (1950-1964), materials relating to Vancouver civic politics (1970-1984), and correspondence with Sir Frederick Dainton (1980-1983), Cecil Green, and Wilder Penfield among many others.

Gibson, William C.

Universities series

This series includes correspondence, notes, research, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, invitations, publications, memos and illustrations relating to universities that W.C.Gibson attended and was employed by, including McGill University, University of British Columbia, University of Victoria, and Oxford University.

Correspondence series

This series includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, awards, notes, research materials, note cards, certificates, passports, pamphlets, newsletters relating to personal and professional life and associations. Cecil Green sub-series contains correspondence, note cards, notes, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings between Cecil and Ida Green with W.C. Gibson.

Photograph series

Series includes a variety of candid and posed photographs depicting William C. Gibson with colleagues, family members and friends. In addition, they have several photos of Cecil Green, some architectural shots of Oxford University, and a vast number of photographs documenting the history of UBC.

Gibson Reprints series

Series includes reprints of articles from medical journals, alphabetized by the author's last name, published in English, French, Russian, German, and Spanish.

Plays series

The series consists of Bullock's plays in draft and final form, including Sokotra and Not to Hong Kong.

Essays and Criticism series

Series consists of essays and literary criticism by Bullock. The essays include My encounters with Japanese Poetry and Literary Translation: Theory and Practice.

Correspondence series

Series consists of extensive correspondence of both a professional and personal nature. The correspondence is incoming and outgoing and includes letters, faxes, copies of e-mails, Christmas and birthday cards. Much of the correspondence concerns Bullocks career and includes such organizations as the C.B.C, the B.B.C., Canadian Fiction Magazine, the International Copyright Bureau, Poetry Canada Review, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the British Centre for Literary Translation, and the National Library of Canada. In addition, the series includes letters and cards from poets, authors, playwrights and artists, including W.H. New, Max Frisch, and Joy Kogawa. Finally, letters, and the majority of birthday and Christmas cards, are from family and friends.

Notes series

Series consists of primarily handwritten notebooks and pages containing unidentified and unorganized poems, prose, and other information.

Works in Translation series

Series consists of plays, prose, and poetry translated by Bullock from their original French, German, or Italian. The works may be complete or incomplete and in draft, revised, or final form.

Kenelm O.L. Burridge fonds

Fonds consists of reports and published and unpublished material which reflect his anthropological interests particularly in the areas of religion and mythology. Fonds also includes Burridge's B. Litt. thesis (1950) and Ph.D. thesis (1953), as well as some recordings of his class lectures given from 1986-1987 recorded by anthropology student Lindy-Lou Flynn.

The series consists of the original blueprint, white print or linen architectural drawings, as well as some mylar copies; photographs of buildings at various stages of construction; related correspondence, reports, journals, minutes of committee meetings, forms of tender, quotations, agreements, specifications, certificates of insurance, and schedules of hardware; and pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and other published materials. The records have been retained by their order of acquisition by the Archives.
