Specifications

Series consists of specifications for construction or maintenance of vessels supplied by marine architects. The series includes specifications for construction of barges, tug boats, and fishing vessels as well as a variety of other types of vessels. A large portion of the specifications are for refitting contracts on various vessels of the Canadian Navy Auxiliary Fleet, as well as for other federal and provincial government agencies.

Special projects

Series consists of records pertaining to special publications that Arsenal Pulp either created or was a part of. Records include poetry, short fiction, catalogues, membership lists, registration lists, notes, correspondence, press releases, reviews and photographs.

The series is divided into three sub-series: Three-Cent Pulp, Arsenal Collaborative Library and the 3-Day Novel Contest.

Speaking and writing

Series reflects Jean Rands’s speaking and writing activities over the course of the 1970s and 80s on topics relating to women and labour activism. Some of the writing in this series was published, including An Account to Settle: The Story of the United Bank Workers (SORWUC) and “Toward an Organization of Working Women” in Women Unite! The series includes manuscripts, draft articles, solidarity speeches, and published versions of articles.

South Vancouver Island history

Records consist of a compiled history of Southern Vancouver Island, for which Burch is referenced as providing “personal interviews,” and articles relating to the same subject. Series is divided into two files: Manuscript and Articles.

Solidarity Bulletin

Contains correspondence, drafts, original copies and other materials related to the production of the Vancouver GMB’s monthly newsletter, Solidarity Bulletin. The 1980s version of the Solidarity Bulletin was published from December of 1983 until May of 1989. This series contains almost the complete run of Solidarity Bulletin with only a couple of issues missing from 1988.

Sofia Girls' Tour

Series consists of correspondence about planning for, posters and other promotional materials about, and photographs of the Sofia Girls’ Rhythmic Gymnastics Team’s tour of Canada in 1956-1957, which Matthew Lindfors was partially responsible for coordinating. The Sofia Girls’ Team were a gymnastics group from Stockholm, Sweden. The group was founded and led by Maja Carlquist, who developed the distinct style of rhythmic gymnastics performed by the Sofia Girls. Contents include: posters, pamphlets, photographs of events and head-shots of the team members, a Swedish Canadian Club book about the tour, and three wooden printing blocks of photographs of the team members performing.

Society Publications & Promotional Material

Series consists of Alcuin Society publications including periodicals, books and published memorabilia. Promotional material, limited edition books, keepsakes, chapbooks, broadsides, pamphlets and brochures are also included in this series. The series is sub-divided into 3 sub-series: „Periodicals‟, „Books‟ and „Keepsakes, Broadsides and Pamphlets‟. File list is organized alphabetically by publication type, and then chronologically.

Socialist poems and prose

This series is made up of poems, essays, and other documents written by Darwin and H. M. "Annie" Charlton, as well as writings the family kept of Mildred Macleod.

Socialist Calendar

This series contains records relating to the of the Socialist Calendar, a significant project of the Boag Foundation. The Socialist Calendar was a annual calendar created by the Boag Foundation featuring highlighted events in the history of socialism and artwork about the socialist movement.

Social and community services

Series documents YWCA Metro Vancouver’s social and community service programs. Among the YWCA’s service focus areas are: affordable housing provided by the YWCA Hotel/Residence, Housing Registry, YWCA housing communities, and short-term and transitional houses; counselling; daycare and early learning; and employment guidance. Although available to members, these services are targeted at individuals, groups, and families identified by the YWCA as vulnerable and facing systemic social and economic barriers. The YWCA has geared its services towards: disabled individuals and their families, homeless youth, immigrant women, single mothers, survivors of violence and/or abuse, and teenage mothers, among others. Activities represented include: setting up and planning particular services; managing, running, and evaluating those services; and communicating with current and potential clients about services offered.

Records consist of reports, studies, meeting minutes, memoranda, correspondence, publications, and other material arising from the YWCA’s planning, evaluation, and management of its social and community services.

Social activism and community engagement

Records and ephemera gathered by Foon Sien related to his activities as a member, executive, or board member of numerous social activist and goodwill organizations across Western Canada. Foon Sien was an executive of the City of Vancouver Re-Development Consultation Committee where he championed for the residents of Chinatown against developers looking to gentrify the neighbourhood. Foon Sien also acted as a chair of the Inter-Ethnic Committee representing the Chinese-Canadian immigrant group for the Centennial Celebration, which served the greater Canadian Confederation Centennial Committee efforts. Further, Foon Sien was also active in the Vancouver Civic Unity Association, was the president of Chinese Benevolent Association (全加中華會館), and was a member of the The Canadian Welfare Council, Chinese Canadian Citizens Association (中加友誼會), the Vancouver Film Council, and the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews. Lastly, the series contains records related to Foon Sien's teaching career.

Sloan Commission.

Series contains records relating to the Sloan Commission. Material consists of memoranda and correspondence, summary of evidence presented at the enquiry, a brief submitted to the Commission by the Consolidated Red Cedar Shingle Association of British Columbia, and transcripts of the inquiry on forest resources.

Slides and Photographs

Records consist primarily of slides along with several photographs. The slides reflect projects that Cardew designed and built, including key projects such as the CN Pavilion at Expo ‘86, Lignum Sawmill Offices in Williams Lake, Crown Life Building (now known by its address at 1500 West Georgia), the Stone (Yunesit’in) Band School, False Creek Townhouses, and the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia, as well as his best known exhibition, Peter Cardew, Ordinary Buildings. Project slides include images of drawings, plans, models, and completed structures. There are also slides of various buildings that may have served as inspiration for his designs.

Slides

Series consists of color 35 mm slides shot by Dorse throughout British Columbia. Most of the slides have a date stamp on them, in addition to a four digit identification number. Generally, slides with the same four digit number also have the same date. No known documentation exists for these numbers however. The slides came to Rare Books and Special Collections in slide boxes that were mostly grouped by these numbers and by dates, but were not arranged in numerical or chronological order. The slides have been re-housed for preservation purposes, but this original grouping and arrangement has been maintained.

Slides

Series consists of images depicting Herring's travels, particularly in Alaska, and including a trip to Russia in 1965. Some relate to forestry; many relate to his personal interests, including hunting and fishing, bagpiping, and participating in various social and cultural events.

Where available, file contents and items lists, as they were listed by the creator, have been included in the file descriptions.

Six Mile Ranch

Series consists of newspaper clippings, newsletters, press releases, correspondence, reports, submissions, and copies of legislation generated during debate over the proposed development of the Kamloops on the Lake project. The series includes copies of the Kamlands Holdings Inc. (Pagebrook Inc.) application for the rezoning of lands which were protected under the Agricultural Land Reserve [ALR]. Other records include reports and correspondence from the Agricultural Land Commission, as well as copies of reports from consultants who researched the agricultural and economic “value” of the land in question. The series includes the initial Rankin Report on the Six Mile Ranch property and the French Report which critiqued the findings published in Rankin’s provincial-government initiated study. The series also includes documents from the Perry Commission including Commissioner David Perry’s final report to the provincial government and numerous submissions made by members of the public to the commission. Sawicki resigned her position as parliamentary secretary over the decision of the provincial government to invoke the Provincial Interest clause as means of overriding ALR legislation. Once the issue was put to a public inquiry, Sawicki’s resignation enabled her to participate in the ensuing debate. The series contains correspondence, personal notes, and speeches reflecting Sawicki’s participation in these events as well as correspondence to and from other NDP MLAs and ministers. Of special interest are the caucus briefings which outline both the Cabinet’s position and Sawciki’s.

Six Darn Cows-Production and Reviews.

Series contains a storyboard, page layout, sketches, rejected and accepted artwork, and reviews for the book, <i>Six Darn Cows</i>. Other documents relating to the publication of <i>Six Darn Cows</i>, can be found in the “Anna’s Pet/Six Darn Cows Materials,” series. These materials are in a separate, intermingled series because the documents found in the files relate to both books. The two works were published as part of the same series, around the same time. As a result, the creator filed many of the documents together. They have been maintained as a separate, integrated series in order to reflect the original organizational system utilized by Blades.

Sir Joseph William Trutch records

Series consists of records of or pertaining to Sir Joseph William Trutch, including correspondence, legal documents, reports by Trutch, and biographical material. Series is arranged into the following sub-series: incoming correspondence, outgoing correspondence, reports, legal documents, and memorabilia concerning the death of Sir Joseph William Trutch.

Simon Fraser University J. S. Woodsworth Chair Committee

Series consists of files related to Simon Fraser University’s establishment of an endowed chair to honour J. S. Woodsworth, Canadian statesman, assisted by a committee with Thomas Berger, chairman. Files include correspondence, pamphlets, posters, and other material concerning the J. S. Woodsworth Endowment Fund in the Humanities.

Silviculture

Series relates to silvicultural practices and information used by Western Forest Products and its predecessors. It contains records generated and collected by Western Forest Products as it pertains to silviculture, which is the practices involved in controlling the establishment, composition, constitution, cultivation, and growth of forests. Series also contains research on silvicultural practices, and most of the material is predominately from the 1950s. Series is divided into three subseries: Growth & Yield Reports, Environmental Reports, and Literature.

Silver-Lead Miners Association of British Columbia records

This series includes articles of association, bylaws, voter’s lists, minutes from general meetings, committee reports and resolutions and financial records. In addition, there is correspondence, minutes and other records relating to an eight hour shift dispute which occurred from 1899-1900. Of particular interest are the records of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency and the Thiel Detective Services Company. These relate to the Coeur d’Alenes riot and the men working at the time. Operative reports regarding union meetings are included.

Sidney Norman records

This series includes correspondence and other records related to Harris and his dealings with the Norman & Co. Mining and Stock Brokers. There are also personal letters between Norman and Harris’ wife Alma after Harris’ death.

Short stories and Essays

The series contains material that spans a twenty five-year period, and a range of writing styles. It contains typescript and computer generated published and unpublished material . The series includes research material, newspaper clipping, photocopies of newspaper clipping, typescript and computer generated material, and the series also contains hand-written annotations and correspondence with publishers.

Short stories

Series consists of manuscripts of short stories written by Spider Robinson . The manuscripts consist of drafts and are arranged by title.

Shingle boycott.

Series contains records relating to the Consolidation of Red Cedar Shingles Association of British Columbia’s involvement in the shingle boycott. Material consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, and letters concerning the boycott of Canadian shingles in the United States. The majority of the press clippings are from various newspapers in Seattle, Washington.

Sheet music and lyrics

Series consists of music and lyrics hand-copied by the Fuller sisters, including lyrics to folk songs interspersed with notes and observations about folk music history and observations from their tours; manuscript sheet music for folk songs, including “When Adam was first created,” “The twelve days of Christmas,” “Katy cruel, “Johnny, the miller,” “Blow, ye winds, blow,” and others; and sheet music broadsides printed and sold by the Fullers with illustrations by Dorothy, printed at the De Vinne Press and issued by the H.W. Gray Company in New York, including “Mowing the barley,” “My man John,” “The wraggle-taggle Gypsies, o!”, “Brixham town,” and “The keeper.” Two copies of “Brixham town” are hand-coloured. Documents are arranged into files according to type of document.

Sheep ranching records.

Series consists of a daily log of Frank Charnley’s sheep ranching activities on Barnston Island, November 20, 1970 – August 6, 1971. The log book also includes mathematical calculations.

Shaughnessy Hospital

McIlrath worked at Shaughnessy Hospital from 1947 to 1976, and was Director from 1961 to 1976.

Series includes a history of Shaughnessy Hospital, Staffing Policy, Patient Profile, newsletters, photographs of Shaughnessy Hospital, and correspondence and notes concerning issues at the hospital.

Sermons by subject

Series consists of themed sermons given by Shimizu. They are arranged according by subject matter. All the sermons are written in Japanese.

Series B: Other Activity 1926-1944

Series consists material related to other left-wing and labour activity in Evans’ life, including the Princeton mine workers strike, his work in support of the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War and the Canadian Labour Defence League and the Communist Party of Canada.

Series A On-to-Ottawa 1935

Series consists of material related to the relief camp worker’s strike and the On-to-Ottawa Trek. It also includes evidence used in the Regina Riot Commission which followed the Trek, and legal statements drawn up on behalf of participants in the Trek. There are also transcripts of the Regina Riot Commission hearings. These files include some photocopies (incl. silver microfilm copies), some originals, and some retyped transcripts with original page numbers in the margins. Some of the transcripts have been annotated.

Serials

This series contains materials from continuing publications issued in installments, typically numbered and dated. Series includes magazines, newsletters, and newspapers.

Select Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs

Waddell chaired the Select Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs from 1996-1997 (36th Parliament, first and second sessions) during its inquiry into treaty negotiations and the Nisga'a Agreement-in-Principle and Final Agreement. The contents of this series reflect the activities the committee participated in, such as transcripts, reports, submissions and correspondence to the committee, and itineraries/briefings for the public hearings.

These records are part of Waddell's work as an MLA in British Columbia. Other records from this time can be found in the Provincial politics series.

Seeking Refuge

Seeking Refuge is a graphic novel written by Irene N. Watts and illustrated by Kathryn Shoemaker. Published in 2016, the work is a sequel to the 2008 graphic novel Good-bye Marianne, and it is an adaptation of Watts' 2000 novel Remember Me. The work tells the story of a young refugee relocated as part of the Kindertransport prior to World War II.

Records in the series include the original art and sketches by Shoemaker (done in pencil) and manuscript by Watts, as well as correspondence between the writer, illustrator, and publisher, and various drafts, corrections, proofs, and research material. Research materials include items used by Shoemaker for illustrations, as well as materials originally belonging to the author, Irene N. Watts, and used to produce Remember Me and Seeking Refuge. These include transit and travel guides, maps, and informally and formally published writing about wartime experiences, particularly focused on the experiences of children.

Together, the files of the series covers the production of Seeking Refuge, from early text to final art, and illustrates much of the creative process by and between Watts and Shoemaker, including transitioning from print to graphic novel, developing graphics, and fitting illustration and text.
