Working conditions

File contains correspondence, reports, and ephemera produced or received by Local 1's Working Conditions Committee. Topics include fluorescent lighting, the Workers' Compensation Board manual, grievance procedure, and first aid kit maintenance.

Working conditions

File contains material relating to working conditions at UBC. Records include "Second draft of amendments to Industrial Health & Safety Regulations (First Aid Section)" from the Worker's Compensation Board of British Columbia (dated September 25, 1978), documents produced by Local 1's Working Conditions Committee, correspondence regarding working conditions, an inspection report, a report regarding the detrimental effects of fluorescent lighting, and a newspaper clipping regarding stretching exercises for office workers.

File also contains a pamphlet from the UBC Alumni Association's Wesbrook Society (possibly from 1982), and copies of Local 1's grievance form.

[Wilson Photo Album]

A personal photo album kept by Clara and/or Kitty Wilson of Vancouver. Mainly portraits of the two sisters and their friends and family, plus some shots in and around Vancouver and British Columbia, including photographs of the Vancouver Pier 'D' Fire of 1938. Very few of the images are captioned. There are also a couple of postcards, and at least one negative included. The album and photographs are in great shape. See also UL_1591 for an album of Clara and Kitty's cycling trips, a few of whose photos are repeated here.

Housed in a leather-bound album with an image of an Aboriginal Chief burned onto the cover. The captions are badly faded, and some of the photos are fading as well.

UBC Alumni Chronicle: The Unionization of UBC

File contains an issue of the UBC Alumni Chronicle, dated Spring 1975. Topics discussed include the UBC Alumni Association election, unionization of UBC, an article on sports and culture, a profile on Tom Wayman, alumni annual giving and a list of scholarships, campus news including coverage of MLA Day, Senate election results, the Alumni Travel Program, and a message from the president, a spotlight section with alumni news, weddings, births, and deaths, and a letters section with submissions from readers.

Treasurer's files

File contains records of the union office treasurer, dated June 20, 1978 to November 20, 1979. Documents include material concerning a 1979 office reorganization. Topics discussed include administrative restructuring, dues restructuring, subsequent by-law amendments, and union income. File also contains correspondence and invoices regarding payments to AUCE Provincial, legal arbitration, employee benefits, office rental, pest control, and union dues. File also contains the following miscellaneous documents: an account log photocopy, agenda and minutes of membership meetings, financial statements, and Local 1 by-laws. File also contains issues of Across Campus (October 1979, March 1979), and Contract Bulletin 3.

The Vanishing Race, The Long Headed Indian of the West Coast of BC

An album of photographs believed to be in British Columbia, including landscape images as well as a number of portraits of Aboriginal peoples, many hand-coloured. Only the photos on the right-hand pages are signed by Ben William Leeson (as B.W. Leeson). It is possible that an unknown individual added their snapshots on the facing pages to a book of Lesson images.

[Ten Annual Cycling Trips, 1938-1947]

Photo album documenting sisters Clara and Kitty Wilson’s ten annual cycling trips taken throughout British Columbia in July and/or August of 1938 through 1947. The first seven trips were on Vancouver Island, the eighth in the Okanagan, and the ninth and tenth in the Cariboo region. The photos are thoroughly captioned and still in good shape. Also included are the letters and postcards they sent home during the trips (half of each card written by each sister), as well as newspaper clippings, business cards, a menu from BC Coast Steamships, a telegram, and a negative. There are also 25 hand-drawn cartoons highlighting some of their adventures. They nicknamed their bikes Rastus and Ginger, and also use a variety of pet names when signing their letters and referring to family members. The album is in decent shape though the pages are flaking at the edges. See also UL_1596 for a family photo album kept by the sisters.

Strike pay

File contains outgoing and incoming correspondence regarding 1978 strike pay, a list of cheques released to signatories, and statements of earnings. Correspondence includes memoranda to Local 1's union office authorizing release of strike pay cheques to third parties. File also includes Local 2's Annual Report 1978/9 Supplement. Topics discussed include maternity benefits, strike action, negotiations with Simon Fraser University, and committee reports.

S.S. "Mist" documents

File contains documents relating to the S.S. "Mist." Documents include the registry certificate for the vessel, coasting license, and receipts for duties and fees paid.

Special Convention on Affiliation, April 1980

File contains material from the April 1980 AUCE Provincial Special Convention on Affiliation. Material includes the Affiliation Bulletin 2 (prepared by Local 1's Affiliation Committee and Provincial staff), an information package about various affiliation options, an Affiliation Update from the Provincial Executive dated April 2nd 1980, and an edition of the AUCE Affiliation Inquiry (vol.1, no.4) dated January 9, 1980.

File also contains the Provincial newsletter AUCE News: Special 9th Annual Convention Edition (June 1982). Topics discussed include provincial nominations, a proposed budget, and proposed resolutions and amendments.

Topics discussed include an NDP Caucus Labour Report on legislation, activities of the CUPE Solidarity Committee, a summary of Bill 28 (Labour Code Amendment Act), International Women's Day, unemployment in BC, rallies and protests against government budgets and policies, military expenditures, poverty, socio-economic policy alternatives and a people's commission, the displacement of Tranquille residents, a lockout of the Theatre Employeess Union, human rights, Expo 86, education cuts and cuts to government programs, and logging on Meares Island. File also includes a copy of the Solidarity Times Volume 1, Number 1, from October 15, 1983, copies of the B.C. A photo album from a British Columbian woman known only as K.B.S. Predominantly family snapshots, as well as photos of travels throughout British Columbia, including Salt Spring Island, Shawnigan Lake, and Victoria. The cover of the leather album is adorned with an image of an Aboriginal chief and a simple landscape. Photos and album are still in good condition. The first large number of images are captioned, but towards the end most are not.

Sealing commission oaths

File contains handwritten copies of the oath sworn by those giving evidence to Pelagic Sealing Commission in English, Nootka, and Chinook Jargon, as well as a note regarding the meaning of the word "Nootka."

File contains materials relating to the 1992 CUPE strike, including photocopies of articles and photographs (originals moved, see below) and news clippings dated February 20, 1992 to March 26, 1992. Topics discussed include background information on the strike, working conditions and wages, pay equity, negotiation, effects of the strike, scabs and strikebreakers, UBC student, administration, and faculty responses to the strike, a B.C. Supreme Court injunction limiting picket locations, the student sit-in at the president's office and related statement, and the end of the strike. File contains journal of "Winifred" account transactions from February 1891 through March 1892. Journal also contains multiplication exercises in pencil.

Schooner "Winifred" documents

File contains documents relating to the schooner "Winifred," also called "Winnifred." Documents include typed copies of the title, statements of the captain and a crew member, and notice of vessel detainment; draft declaration by Charles Spring regarding "Winnifred;" documents related to the Bering Sea Claims Commission claims; bill of sale for shares of "Winifred" to Spring; repair and improvement receipts; transcript of the record and proceedings of the United States court case against "Winifred;" and other documents.

Schooner "Kate" log for 1892

Log by commander A. J. Taylor contains entries on conditions, location, and activities of the crew on "Kate" from March 5, 1892 to August 4, 1892. The June 21 entry notes the arrival of H.M.S. "Daphne." The log also contains a list of crew and provisions taken on board.

Schooner "Henrietta" documents

File contains documents relating to the schooner "Henrietta." Documents include accounts and expense sheets, including an accounting of expenses to outfit the vessel, lists of improvements and repairs, and payments to crew; promissory notes / receipts for advances to the crew.
