Joint Board of Teacher Education series

Series consists of minutes, reports, and other documentation from the Joint Board of Teacher Education from 1963-1983. By 1964, representatives from the University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University joined representatives from UBC, the Provincial Department of Education, the B.C. School Trustees’ Association and the B.C. Teachers’ Federation to form the Joint Board of Teacher Education. The series has been re-organized in roughly chronological order. John Trutch records

Series consists of diaries, correspondence, and financial records of John Trutch, and is arranged into the following sub-series: diaries, incoming correspondence, outgoing correspondence, miscellaneous letters and fragments of correspondence, and financial records.

John Ridington material series

Series consists of a handwritten journal created by John Ridington during his family's trip to Canada by ship (1889), publications and copies of sketches by Ridington, clippings relating to Ridington, and bound copies of his speeches and articles (1911-1945).

John M. Buchanan Personal Files series

Series consists of correspondence, including press clippings and printed material, relating to Buchanan's tenure as Chancellor between 1966 and 1969. It includes routine letters and invitations and speeches, addresses, and letters discussing university politics. Records are arranged alphabetically by the correspondent's name, then chronologically by date. One file includes Buchanan's personal correspondence with Hon. Chief Justice Colin Campbell McLaurin, first Chancellor of the University of Calgary.

John M. Buchanan Memorial Fund series

H.R. MacMillan established the John M. Buchanan Memorial Fund shortly before his death in 1975. It was named for his friend, former UBC Chancellor John M. Buchanan, and administered through the President's Office. The fund was established with a $50,000 donation spent on student-related projects related to academic programmes. The University paid interest on the fund balance, but the grant terms stated that it was to be paid out over a specific period – about $4000 every year. By the time the final disbursement was paid in 1996, total disbursements were more than $150,000.

The Buchanan Fund Committee's chairs initially maintained records throughout its operation: Erich Vogt, Cy Finnegan, James Dybikowski, and Byron Hender. The bulk of the documents was transferred to the Archives by Byron Hender in 1996

John and Mary Markle Foundation series

The Foundation "was chartered in 1927 to promote the advancement and diffusion of knowledge...and the general good of mankind....the foundation made grants for social welfare...for medical research; and grants for scholars in academic medicine."
The series consists of correspondence, working papers and annual reports relating to the operation of the selection committee on which MacKenzie served. Included also are yearly reports on the recipients of Markle Foundation grants.

Jim Tom’s Office Chronological series

The series consists of reports, budgets, minutes of committee meetings, technical information, and other administrative and operational records of the computing centre. These records were made, received, and used by Jim Tom, who was the Director of Telecommunications (1992 to 1999), Networks (1999 to 2004), and e-Learning & Telestudios (2004).

Jewish Community series

Series contains materials about Steinberg’s work on behalf of the Jewish community, including information on the Canadian Jewish Congress and the creation of Jewish schools in Vancouver.

Jessop Papers series

Series consists of correspondence, research notes, xerox documents, press clippings relating to Johnson's manuscript for his book John Jessop, Goldseeker and Educator. The research papers from the Jessop manuscript have been kept in Johnson's filing order.

J.D. Whitham photographs

Series consists of photographs attributed to J.D. Whitham. Series consists of photographic slide transparencies depicting subjects such as boats and water, trains, and various scenic locations around British Columbia with additional coverage of other locations in Canada.

Japanese Canadians redress subject files

Series consists of files of correspondence, and speeches by Thomas Berger regarding redress for losses suffered by Japanese Canadians in Canada during and after the war of 1939-1945, a file of material related to the National Association of Japanese Canadians, and a file of press clippings assembled for reference.

Japanese Canadian Redress and History Records.

Series consists of records related to Miki’s activities with several voluntary Japanese Canadian cultural and political organizations, files related to Miki’s research on redress issues, and the records of two other individuals, Cassandra Kobayshi and Randy Enomoto, with whom Miki worked with in the course of his involvement in the redress movement. The series contains agendas and minutes of meetings, correspondence and memoranda, notes and notebooks, drafts of manuscripts, reports, news clippings, published guides, financial reports and proposals, conference programs, transcripts and audio recordings of forum and symposia proceedings, meetings, and other events, research material including articles and essays, serials, legislation and other records. The series documents the Japanese Canadian redress movement generally and Miki’s work in that movement particularly.

Japanese Canadian historical documents

Series consists of documents created by civil rights organizations
concerned with Japanese-Canadian rights:

  1. Japanese Canadian Committee for Democracy (Toronto, ON) membership application forms (three copies, blank). Forms request name, age, address, occupation, and telephone number, and a membership fee of two dollars.

  2. Newsletter of the Citizenship Defence Committee (Toronto, ON) issued on April 25, 1946 by Kunic Hidaka, executive secretary. The newsletter discusses financing for an appeal to the privy council, the engagement of an English barrister for the appeal, the Ontario provincial convention, and time limits on permits and placement allowances.

  3. Memorandum issued by the Canadian Committee, World Federation of Democratic Youth (Toronto, ON) on June 22, 1946 concerning deportation and internment of Canadians of Japanese ancestry.

Jacques the Woodcutter-Production, Reviews and Materials.

<i>Jacques the Woodcutter</i>, was written by Michael Macklem and published by Oberon Press in 1977.
Series contains sketches, story research and reference photos, rejected artwork, notes, the storyboard, correspondence, the contract, royalty documents, catalogues and reviews for, <i>Jacques the Woodcutter</i>. Much of the final artwork from this published work may be found in “The Singing Basket Production, Reviews and Materials,” series, as the same artwork was used for both publications. The artwork has been annotated by the creator to indicate which paintings were used in which publication.

It’s Elementary series

This book was published in 1994 and is intended for students aged 10 years and older. It teaches students about critical scientific principles through a range of different experiments. Series consists of a draft of the publication.

Issues Files

Series consists of newspaper clippings, correspondence, memoranda, and maps collected by Sawicki during her years as MLA for Burnaby-Willingdon. The materials cover mainly environmental issues such as Delta Crown Farmlands/Roberts Bank backup, Big Bend development, the Alcan Kemano Completion Project, and Clayoquot Sound which reflect Sawicki’s interest and involvement in environmental legislation. The series also includes materials on issues relating to the Burnaby-Willingdon constituency such as the Willingdon Youth Detention Centre.

Ironworkers Case

Series consists of clippings, notes and legal documents related to the Dominion Bridge v. International Union of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Ironworkers, Local 97 and Attorney General of British Columbia case related to the Ironworkers strike of 1959.

IPR Conferences series

Series consists of records documenting I.P.R. and AIPR conferences and includes correspondence, reports, published materials, an album containing photographs, and individual photographs. The images are of various individuals and groups who attended I.P.R. conferences and three portraits of Edward C. Carter, the first secretary-general of I.P.R. The series is arranged in the following sub-series: Conference Papers, Minutes and Reports, and Photographs.

Inverness Cannery School

Series consists of records relating to a school operated by Inverness Cannery. Includes correspondence, school order forms, reports on annual general meetings, applications for position of teacher, school receipts, and monthly reports prepared for department of education.

Interviews series

The series consists of transcripts of interviews carried out with former students, friends and colleagues of Ethel Johns.

Interviews & Presentations

This series consists of interviews done by Kilian with Colin Gabelmann, an MLA from the Vancouver area. Issues discussed include women’s rights, social services and a day in the life of an MLA. The presentations are related to education, science fiction and technology.

Interviews

Series consists of drafts of transcribed interviews conducted by Garrick Chu and others with Byng Thom, Andrew Joe, and Roy Kiyoki and a basic list of questions for war subjects.

Interview transcripts and sound recordings

Series consists of transcripts and sound recordings of interviews conducted by Rolf Knight. Includes transcripts of interviews with Harvey Murphy and John Smith, and transcripts and sound recordings of interviews with Bob Chestnut.

Interview tapes

Series consists of recordings of interviews, which relate primarily to fisheries and canneries but also to the logging industry. Stacey identifies himself as the interviewer in some of the tapes, but his involvement is not as apparent in all of them.

Interview recordings

Series contains a total of 18 cassette tapes recorded by Irene Howard. Some were conducted in the course of research on the life of Ethel Wilson. These include interviews and/or discussions with Lila Malkin, Lucile Parsons, D’Uyly Rochfort and Mrs. George Thompson. The other interviews related to the history of Vancouver’s West End with Mr. G.E. Eldridge, Mrs. A.D. Bell-Irving, Elspeth Cherniavsky and Henry Randolph Clyne. The other interviews include Clyde Turner on Woodward’s Department Store and Bill Beacon of Berryland Farms. There is one interview that contains material for broadcast, called Mom’s Repairs.

Interview and Sound Recording Project Records.

Series consists of transcripts of Miki’s interviews with Eli Mandel and Robert Kroetsch, and correspondence and permission slips concerning a studio recordings project organized by Miki. Also includes recordings of interviews conducted by Ann Sunahara of J. Tanaka, Charlie Tanaka, Kinzie Tanaka, George Tanaka, and Harold Hirose, and interviews of other important figures of the Japanese Canadian community and redress movement.

Interview and film transcripts

Series consists of transcripts of interviews conducted with the friends, family, and associates of Malcolm Lowry and Lowry scholars for the documentary, as well as a final transcript of the completed film. The producers of the film conducted interviews with 46 people in England, Canada, and Mexico, though not all of the interviews were used in the final film, including an interview with Jan Gabrial, which was conducted after the documentary was completed. The majority of the interviews were conducted by Robert Duncan with a few being conducted by Donald Brittain. The interview transcripts include annotations that may indicate the sections considered for use in the film. Interview transcripts are arranged by film roll numbers or location roll numbers, numbers given to each ten-minute film roll for editing and record-keeping purposes. The roll numbers correspond to the chronological order in which the interviews took place. The series is arranged into 39 files. Files are named according to the interview subject(s) and the film roll number(s).

Inter-University Activities and Committees series

This series consists of correspondence, documentation, minutes, notifications, reports, and other materials about the University at Large and many committees to which the Head of Graduate Studies was involved or reported. It is divided into the following subseries: President's Committee of Academic Deans (alphabetical), President's Committees (numeric), University at Large (alphabetical), Senate (numeric), Other University Committees (alphabetical), and Faculty Awards Committee – Killam and other (alphabetical). This series has a mixture of arrangement systems. Each sub-series is noted with the arrangement used.

InterPARES

This series is divided into sub-series sections covering the various InterPARES phases. Each series consists primarily of SSHRC applications, reports, budgets and correspondence relating to funding. The series also includes publications from InterPARES research and conferences, including databases and presentation slides, which can be found on the CDs. The images included relate to the inauguration of InterPARES, international team meetings, conference presentations and the first two symposiums: How Do You Know it’s the Real Thing I and II.

Internment camp newsletters

Records in this series include editions of newsletters created during the time of internment and during the return voyage.

Internews was created by and circulated among internees during their time at Santo Tomas. Prior to circulation, the newsletters were reviewed and approved by the Japanese to prohibited negative or rebellious discourse. Newsletters reported primarily on the activities of the camp and its internees.

International work

This series includes Waddell's work on the international scene, spanning his legal and political career. Most notably, the series features the early stages of advocacy for the International Criminal Court, through Waddell's involvement in the Canadian arm of Parliamentarians for Global Action (previously known as Parliamentarians for World Order). Contents include newsletters, press, correspondence, reports, agendas and itineraries, travel information, invitations, and research. Contents cover group memberships, travel and meetings, and subject files on international subjects.

International Women's Day

Series includes materials related to the organization of International Women’s Day events in 1977 and 1979. In 1977, Epstein assisted in organizing marches and a series of workshops, and the organizing committee produced pamphlets on women’s and family issues (eg. daycare affordability) in cooperation with the Women’s Research Centre. In 1979, the IWD Coalition worked with a variety of other women’s and labour groups, including the Canadian Proletarian Party newspaper, SORWUC, the Vancouver Council of Women, AUCE, CUPW, and the BC Federation of Labour. They produced ta variety of information pamphlets, hosted an information day on women’s issues with speakers and a bake sale, hosted a concert, and advertised for a rally and demonstration about various issues related to women’s liberation.

Series contents include photograph negatives and textual records relating to the organization of International Women’s Day events in 1977 and 1979. Textual materials include administrative records (meeting minutes, committee reports, handwritten notes, mailing lists, correspondence, and event itineraries), promotional materials (flyers, posters, pamphlets, and information sheets), and newspaper clippings. Mailing lists cover organizations and individuals from the greater Vancouver region.

International Trade Commission.

Series contains records relating to the International Trade Commissions and the Council of Forest Industries involvement in the commission. Material consists of memos and correspondence regarding the Commission, statements made by the Senate Finance Committee, a petition to the International Trade Commission and the United States Department of Commerce regard Softwood Lumber, Shakes and Shingles, and Fence, Shingle and Shake pre, post, and hearing documents as well as the injury decision report, notes from P. Gilbert on the Shingle and Shake inquiry, and a collection of proceedings of the Commission.

International series

This series includes records relating to the collaboration between Distance Education and Technology and various universities worldwide to improve distance education. This includes correspondence, brochures, meeting information, conference programs and proceedings, project proposals, and reports. The series is arranged according to the filing system provided by the creator.
