Maxim Lieber fonds

The fonds primarily features Maxim Lieber’s personal correspondence, particularly from 1965-1985; correspondence with academics interested in aspects of his personal and professional life; and publishing contracts for his edited anthologies. Additionally, some personal correspondence belongs to Maxim Lieber’s wife, Minna Lieber. Significant individuals represented include Langston Hughes, Erskine Caldwell, Malcolm Cowley, Vladimir Solomonovich Pozner, Howard Fast, Albert Maltz (of the Hollywood Ten), and Allen Weinstein (author of Perjury: The Hiss-Chambers Case).

Records are arranged in files. Documentary forms include the following: personal correspondence; signed copies of poems; a photograph of Langston Hughes from 1965; signed contracts for Lieber’s various edited anthologies; and cheque stubs.

Icelandic Archives of British Columbia fonds

The IABC fonds reflects the community collecting practices that the IABC undertook to preserve the history of Icelanders in British Columbia. Fonds is arranged in eight subfonds that reflect the various community organizations from which the archives originally collected.

Fonds documents the IABC’s commitment to preserving the lived experiences of its Icelandic community and is arranged into seven series that correspond to the IABC’s activities: administration and operation; providing educational programs and collecting biographies as well as written and oral histories; collecting Icelandic music; compiling a collection of Icelandic newspapers and publications; holding exhibits and events; acquiring photographic collections; and lastly acquiring collections of textual records, ephemera, and artifacts from its community.

Fonds also contains eight other subfonds of textual, photographic, audiovisual, and ephemeral material of Vancouver-based Icelandic Societies including the Sólskin Society, the Icelandic Canadian Club of British Columbia (ICC of BC), the Icelandic National League of North America (INL of NA), Icelandic Care Home Höfn Society, the Scandinavian Cultural Society (SCS), Ströndin Internet Radio, the Danish Archives, and the Icelandic Lutheran Church.

Jack Pearcey fonds

Fonds captures the life of Jack Pearcey in British Columbia in the 1920s when he was an engineering student at the University of British Columbia (class of 1927) and when he traveled the province as part of his work for the Geological Survey of Canada. Photographs depict Pearcey and his colleagues doing survey work in rural areas and feature such locations as Nakusp, Prosperity, Green Point, Wreck Bay, Victoria, Marmor Glacier, and Blair Glacier. Pearcey’s Geological Survey of Canada work in the Slocan region features Slocan, Slocan Lake, Kaslo, Kootenay Lake, Sandon, New Denver, and Carpenter Creek Valley. The fonds consists primarily of records relating to two specific areas of Larry Wong’s life – his writing and his interest in Chinese-Canadian History. Wong’s writings date as far back as his university days through to the publication of his book Dim Sum Stories: A Chinatown Childhood in 2011. Records reflect Wong’s time as the Director of the Chinese Canadian Military Museum Society and as a tour guide through Vancouver’s Chinatown. The fonds consists of Flesher's unpublished memoirs entitled "Timber: The Log of a Western Logger" (alternately “A Western Logger’s Log”) with revised drafts by Elsie Gregory MacGill. The manuscript provides an account of the British Columbia logging industry from 1912 to 1965. The fonds also includes five daily journals (1934-1969), correspondence (1945-1972), legal documents (1904-1912), photographs of Flesher's family and early logging career, and printed material (newspaper clippings and periodicals). Most of the records relate to his activities in the Phillips Arm, BC, area.

John Keenlyside Legal Research Collection

The fonds consists of legal documents collected by John Keenlyside over the last thirty five years. The documents give insight into the formation of British Columbia's legal system when it consisted of two colonies. The legal records (including writs, testimony, judgements, and other court documents) were produced by judges, magistrates, defendants, claimants, and other relevant parties. Some figures of historical significance who created legal records in this fonds are the first judge in BC, the first Attorney General, and BC's earliest clergy, businessmen, and other prominent figures from the colonial period.

This fonds also consists of documents related to the British Columbia Provincial Police force and various Japanese-Canadian and civil rights groups.
