The fonds consists of records related to Vancouver Status of Women’s (VSW’s) administrative activities, projects and lobbying endeavours, production, marketing, and distribution of Kinesis, their activities related to their advocacy function, and research and reference resources. Although the nature of VSW’s activities has changed over time, the organization has consistently maintained a commitment to addressing social issues related to women, including gender discrimination, pay equity, familial violence, racism, and many more topics. VSW has addressed these issues through a variety of avenues, including publications, press releases, lobbying of governments, a television program, workshops, and services for individuals in Vancouver. The fonds reflects these diverse organizational interests and activities in six series: 1. Administrative and executive; 2. Projects and lobbying activities; 3. Research and reference resources; 4. Advocacy; 5. Kinesis; and 6. Kinesis photobank and production room materials. Additionally, the fonds contains alphabetized subject files dating predominantly 1971-1978. The initial accession and first accrual are grouped into sets and described in the attached PDF finding aid.

The Administrative and executive series contains records pertaining to operational and executive activities including finance, committee and volunteer administration, employee management, correspondence, and strategic planning for the organization. Record types include grant applications, correspondence, invoices and receipts, meeting minutes, training materials, and correspondence.

The Projects and lobbying activities series features the records of VSW’s numerous and diverse projects and lobbying activities. Record types include VSW briefs, press releases, submissions to government, research reports, publications, correspondence, indexes for back issues of Kinesis, and volunteer applications.

The Research and reference resources series comprises materials from third parties that VSW collected to support its research projects and the needs of its visitors. The series also contains VSW briefs, press releases, and reports inter-filed with research materials. Record types include briefs and reports from other organizations, newspaper and magazine clippings, VSW correspondence, grey literature, copies of academic journals, and cassette tapes in honour of International Women’s Day.

The Advocacy series features records related to VSW lobbying and advocacy activities. These activities primarily included organizing and participating in committees and task forces set up by all levels of government, lobbying, and preparing briefs on legislative documents and materials. Record types include: correspondence with the Ministry of Justice and different coalitions such as BC Coalition of Women Centres and the 52% Coalition; meeting agendas and minutes; information sheets and brochures; event invitations; and other materials arising from VSW’s lobbying and advocacy work.

The Kinesis series includes records related to production, publication, marketing, and distribution of Kinesis, Vancouver Status of Women’ most significant publication in BC. Record types include design sketches and proofs, advertising, readers’ correspondences and surveys, volunteer training manuals, staff self-evaluations, and monthly activity reports.

The Kinesis photobank and production room materials series contains materials from the production room of Kinesis. These materials predominantly reflect the production cycle of the magazine and its records organization system for photographic and graphic materials that were used in or collected for future use in the magazine. Records include photographs, negatives, contact sheets, ephemera, and administrative records.

Fonds documents the Vancouver Town Planning Commission’s involvement in town planning and zoning regulations. It consists of material produced through the Commission’s discussions and recommendations regarding planning and zoning both for the city and for individual developments.

Meeting minutes record meetings held by the Commission’s executive committee and sub-committees, as well as public hearings held by the Commission. They address planning and zoning applications, planning and zoning by-laws and proposed amendments, and city infrastructure proposals and program progress. Zoning applications and development permits include information on specific developments, property history, and correspondence.

Fonds includes meeting minutes, development and zoning applications, by-law documents and drafts, correspondence, architectural drawings, maps, reports, and other material produced as part of the Vancouver Town Planning Commission’s business. Material is arranged chronologically.

The fonds also contains several non-WIF records relating to feminist and women’s issues, general art and film, as well as local and federal politics that reflects the context of the time and place in which Women in Focus were operating.

Records relating to the first series, the Administrative series, includes files dealing with the maintenance and upkeep of the society such as: meeting minutes, sales and rental agreements, artist contracts, artist resumes, notes, lease information, WIF newsletters, and legal and court documents. The series also consists of two subseries: Financial and Correspondence.

Records relating to the second series, the Production and Distribution series, include files dealing the Women in Focus Society’s production and distribution of feminist video and film. Production records include: meetings and records from the production committee; files relating to various individual productions; and publicity for WIF productions. Distribution records include: distribution statistics; catalogues; distribution information and research; and distribution correspondences.

Records relating to the third series, the Gallery series, include files dealing with the Women in Focus Society’s art gallery events. Gallery records include: records relating to the gallery committee; artist submissions; publicity for gallery shows; research into potential gallery shows; gallery guides; information relating to specific shows; and gallery sign in books.

Records relating to the fourth series, the Events series, include files dealing with the Women in Focus Society’s various events that they hosted or participated in. Event records include: publicity for events; project budgets and logistics research; correspondences and press releases about events; documents relating to workshops; research relating to participating in other events. Many records in the Events series relate to project-specific grant applications in the Administrative series.

Records relating to the fifth series, the Resources and Reference series, include files dealing with the Women in Focus Society’s research into related organizations and various of topics of interest. A large portion of the material is reflective of the Portage Mountain Development Project, a large hydro-electric project at Portage Mountain in north-east British Columbia. The following projects, which were all part of the Portage Mountain Development Project, are reflected in the fonds: the Portage Mountain Lookout Building, Portage Mountain Control Building, Portage Mountain Power House, Hudson’s Hope Housing and George W. Pearkes Elementary School.
Records are arranged generally according to project, keeping the original filing system of the creator.

The majority of the fonds consists of photographs, negatives, slides and architectural drawings pertaining to project sites, spanning primarily from the 1960s to the 1990s. Textual records in the fonds primarily consist of correspondence, publicity material and publications pertaining to the projects completed by Rhone & Iredale Architect and the Iredale Partnership.

The fonds have been arranged into nine series: general programming, administrative, exhibitions, Front Magazine, Luminous Sites, media arts and video program, new music, performance art, and publicity and promotional materials. As much as possible, the files are arranged as they were by the original curators and program administrators. Early records (1973-1983) for all the programs are grouped together. Video program files were separated starting in 1976 when the program began. Following 1983, the programs each had individual curators.

The fonds consists of photographs of mines, mining activities, and mining personnel created and collected for use in the Western Miner and its predecessor publications, The Miner and the British Columbia Miner. Images include aerial views as well as ground level shots of mine sites, buildings, townsites, mining, milling, smelting and other mineral processing operations. The photographs include exteriors and interiors of mines and buildings, crews at work, and a collection of portraits of company executives, staff and Canadian politicians. Mining equipment is featured including excavators, diamond drills, continuous miners, loaders, shuttle cars, muckers, ore conveyors, and drilling rigs.

Many of the records in this fonds were used in relation to Burch’s autobiography, and therefore pertain to his childhood, education, navy service, and largely to his career as a forester. It also reflects other projects undertaken by Burch, such as the Working Forest publication, a history of South Vancouver Island, as well as papers, research, correspondence, and speeches. The fonds consists of copies of correspondence, briefs, and submissions regarding selected wilderness areas throughout the province sent by interested parties such as MacMillan Bloedal Ltd. and Comino as well as municipalities and concerned private citizens to the Committee. Most of the submissions were dated in December, 1985.

The fonds consists of textual and photographic records relating to personal, business and financial matters of the Wilkinson family and their lives in British Columbia in the twentieth century. The fonds includes individual photographs and a photograph album depicting locations of the lower mainland and Vancouver Island, student group photographs and images of family members and individuals. The textual records pertain to the personal correspondence of the members of the Wilkinson family, school records, an appointment book, a diary, sketchbooks of international travel, personal financial records and statistical records relating to British Columbia logging practices.

William Arthur Paskins fonds

Fonds reflects William A. Paskins’ early career in naturopathy, including his presidency of the Association of Naturopathic Physicians of British Columbia. The material appears to be from the 1940s and 1950s and includes transcripts and copies of speeches, lectures, and publications by Paskins. One publication featured in this fonds is the typescript for a book entitled "How to be happy and healthy though civilized; psychosomatic medicine for psychosomatic diseases".

Clippings, minutes, correspondence, photographs and printed material record union and personal involvement in the strike and retrospective notes on events of the incident are included. Material relating to union recognition and working conditions at the Pioneer Mine is significant.
